Brendel's '78 recording of Beethoven Piano Sonata No.3 is played with bold confidence but has a somewhat coolish attitude. Missing here is a charming friendlier personalities of either Kempff or Backhaus. Adagio gets too ponderous lacking communication skills. Scherzo is no fun and the final movement is too bombastic and too as a matter of fact and tiring to get through. He turned this lovely little tune into something self serving and I got an impression he's just taking himself way too seriously.

That's interesting Richard. This free sampler was my first introduction to Mary B after which I was hooked. I remember cutting the picture above out of the mag to slot into CD case.

This was also my first "introduction." I have several of her albums now, but usually find myself gravitating towards this compilation for an MB fix.

Yep, my first introduction to the wonderful Ms Black too. A great recording to boot. I'm still really taken with her last album, which I shall play immediately :-

Original vinyl. Arrived today and coming to the end of my first listen. A mix of Flamenco guitar and West Coast jazz guitar. Quite relaxing.
