Brahms Piano Concerto No.2: This reissue off the 78's ( 1940 recording ) isn't hifi yet I get the drama and scale of the score well. Toscanini/Horowitz pairing created a remarkable musicianship and creative artistries that even today their performance is refreshing.
Dear Kuma,
I used to have an original Wartime set of HMV 78 pressings of this. You are right. It still offers a freshness that has not been invalidated by more modern performances.
A reminder that some of the great performances of the past have something to offer that modern conditions cannot ever hope to reproduce!
George,
I lean a lot from these old recordings.
Hoping that someone would come along and recreate some of the past brilliant performance but alas, so far no dice. Most of them seem to be technicians, rather than interpretors.
Either that or I am just an old school.
It's pity that we are not able to restore old recordings correctly with all that digital technical advancements.
Here's another Toscanini/Horowitz recording from the past that I wish available in a better fidelity.

I have another recording by them made in pre war (1941 ) at the Carnegie but this later '43 live broadcast far outweighs the performance. Obviously I have not heard all the Tchaikovsky Piano Concertos, but so far noone has surpassed this particular live concert recording in terms of excitement, engagement and musical pulse.
Dear Kuma,
I think we might both be a little bit old school, if certainly not old hat!
I try to spread the word about the great performances from the past, and so often I am met with a puzzled reaction, more or less along the lines of, "Why do that when the recording is not nearly so good as newer ones?"
The idea that the performance might yet be unrivalled does not seem to cross peoples' minds!
Very best wishes from George

Hmm. I didn't know that, Chris. One of my favourite Bowie albums that I've been listening to since it was released yet your post has prompted me to read properly the sleeve notes for the first time and there sure enough is the credit to RW. As the saying goes 'you learn something new everyday'.

Long time since I've played this and it just caught my eye when browsing my CD rack. Peter G is certainly a talent.
In a similar vein ...

Sirenia - Nine Destinies and a Downfall. Another excellent album. Well played and a distinctive voice. 'The Other Side' is especially good. CD ripped to FLAC.
Not heard of this lot, Sorren. I'm going to give it go and have just ordered the CD.

The previously unreleased 1972 Bitter End NYC from this wonderful box set:

Have a look at this:

Among my Dire Straits collection this album rarely gets played so I thought it deserved a spin. The track Where do you think you're going? is one I particularly like.

First album I ever heard on a good hi-fi.
Still brings back that memory.

I will, Sorren. I've found this thread a terrific source for discovering new music, as well as prompting ideas of what I might play from my existing collection. Great stuff.

Pieces of a Dream: 80s smooth jazz cheeze.

A collection of groovy tunes from Stix Hooper ( Crusaders' drummer ) He should not sing and stick to ( no pun intended ) drumming, tho.
