Bert,

Just saw Lewis (with Kuma) performing the 958, 959 & 960 at the Chicago Symphony Hall last season. Three words describing the concert are: bold, sparkling and flowing. What I was missing dearly was some lyricism. It is just hard to imagine a Schubert without it.

1944 Live Broadcast recording of Shostakovich Symphony No.1.

It does not have the same intensity or depth of later Leningrad but it's just astonishing that the composer was only 19 when he wrote it.

Hmm. That alternative could of course be even more interesting than music, Steve!

Too knackered to tend to the lady garden.

Hi Haim,

You described it very well. I was asking myself while I was listening to it. Why does it sound like something I haven't heard before - but indeed the lyricism is missing. But then again I find it a more then interesting recording.

Cheers,

Bert
