Now I am getting a hang of Briten's music thanks to Van Beinum/Concertgebeuw's friendlier live recording.

I actually prefer his reading over Britten himself conducting which I think is a sort of a cold fish.

What do you think of this one Jeff?

The Young Person's Guide To The Orchestra (Variations And Fugue On A Theme Of Purcell) Op.34

Interesting excercise and educational piece to understand how each instrument sounds like in an orchestra. Musically there isn't much going on but the finale percussion piece is fun as it's got everything. The final fugue is artificially pumped up for an impressive ending. Giulini tries to make something of it but there isn't anything to unsurface as the score itself is pretty shallow.

On lovely 180 gm vinyl .  Just added a HiCap DR to the 282 and it is sonic bliss

Out 9th June. First track sounds like Lu Williams but this is a really good album. Possibly for me anyway her best album.

The new Jess Klein

On balance this is a bit lethargic set. Adagio doesn't have that intensity dragging on longer than it should. Front half is good but the back half loses a plot and can't retain the drama or tension. Even the finale is unnecessarily stretched out.

The timing is the longest I have heard of this Symphony at almost 80 minutes but the extra length did not help as Toscanini or Ivanov makes a bigger impression on me at a lot less.

Sonically, this is one of the worst Philips CD I have heard, too. Surprising because they usually put out decent CDs.

Altho, I have many Oscar Peterson records, I never quite get what he's about.

Case in point is this lovely album packed with my favourite Sinatra tunes but I am admiring Ray Brown's bassline or Ed Thigpen's drums more.

The cleanliness of the digital recording is welcome even if it lacks some of the intensity of Solti or the emotional connection of Boehm. Today: Das Rheingold and maybe Die Walkure.

WAV rip to NS01, streaming through NDS.

The cover art bears a certain similarity to many King Crimson albums.

Haim, you always succeed in getting me to dive into my collection to listen to forgotten gems. Just finished his biography, which was reference in "What are you reading," thread - not a happy story, but the musical legacy stands scrutiny. I love his stuff with Gerry Mulligan

Same here, Huw. Happens all the time, and expected since we share a similar musical taste. Have a good weekend.
