Tubin (1905-1982)! Wikipedia Page
I recently download the 10 completed symphonies from Estonia's greatest composer - Eduard Tubin. eClassical were doing a special offer on 5 albums for less than 20 quid and being a bit of an experimenter I thought why not?
I have now listened up to the 3rd Symphony, which I will listen to again tonight and they are glorious. They are in the same sort of tradition as Stravinsky, Prokofiev and Janacek, so if you like these three you will probably like Tubin. But that is not to say that he copies anything those 3 did.
They are very dramatic pieces in which the percussionists certainly earn their keep! They thread folk themes in too and just sound wonderful. This guy deserves more attention.
Worth a listen.
G I am also a DeadHead and so often listen to the boys and yes Mars Hotel is a great album.
I have never heard Led Zeppelin so good.....in high res...

Mentioned on this page and getting a huge thumbs up from me:
Pretzel Logic - Hate pretzels but love this album and this band as they were then.
Debussy - La Ner - Nocturnes -- Simply beautiful music, look out for the huge boxset of Debussy on Amazon.
Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life. What a great album and a great man. Have a few of his albums on vinyl. One of the greatest.
Little Feat - Great Band, especially when Lowell George was alive. Look out for box sets on Amazon. Dixie Chicken etc.
Mark Knopfler - What a great guitarist and a very handy composer to say the least. I saw him twie when he was in Dire Straits. He had this wonderful ability of being able to 'Float' notes out to you. Wonderful to listen to live.
Sabbath - Love the Paranoid album - War Pigs, Iron Man.
Paul Simon - Graceland - what more can be said about this album from one of the greatest songwriters of all time. If he had written nothing else apart from the song 'Sound of Silence' you would still have to use the word genius to describe him.
Bach - Goldberg Variations - Don't know this orchestral version, I have the Glenn Gould version, with all the grunting, groaning and singing - it is brilliant
Grateful Dead - I have already said it in a slightly earlier post - probably my favourite rock band. God Bless Keith, Jerry & Pigpen.
Some good reccos there guys.

recommended special in high res...

Just got in straight from Japan.
first spin, great bass playing
Stereolab - PENG ! - on cd. Their first album, quite lo fi, but interesting and sounds fresh, nice and psychedelic.
Arrived today. This is a beautiful album, some unreleased tracks and three unplugged versions from the 1998 'Crazy On The Weekend' album - Spinning Round The Sun, Hurricane & the title track. The version of Hurricane is worth the price of the album alone! Just Gavin, guitar and mandolin. The double vinyl is flat and noise free with excellent SQ.This has to be my album of the year, it is sublime. A big thank you to Jonn for the heads up earlier this week. Oh and by the way the album also comes with a CD and DVD 'The Living Room' a film by Shane Meadows.![]()

If you have a fancy for a bit of the ole psychedelic have a listen to Pinkunoizu, they are the best Danish psychedelic group I have ever heard.
Don't know what the music is like but what a beautiful alum cover, like being in a church with stained glass windows. What is the music?

See if I can handle this ![]()
This album drew me to Ambrose, although I still like Christian Scott more...
+1
Second listen and I like it. I think this could become a favourite, but only for certain times! The sound is pretty good too!

A Bristol based contemporary jazz quartet. Interesting stuff IMO.

Nick Mulvey’s debut album has been hotly anticipated, and it doesn’t disappoint.
‘First Mind’ showcases new sides to the former Portico Quartet member: his rhythmic guitar is born from West African influences, his love of hip-hop evident, and the ambience, groove and melody here proves irresistible.
There are some recognisable tracks, familiar to fans who’ve been around since the beginning of this solo adventure, but the new offerings stand out. The title track is as subtle and beautiful as Nick Drake, while ‘April’ is stunning, Mulvey’s fingers fluttering over strings like a heard of wild ponies.
‘First Mind’ is captivating, full of intricacies and influences that should see it celebrated as one of the great albums of 2014.
Beethoven piano sonatas played by Wilhelm Kempff, mono DG tulip box set.
Fabulous.
