Excellent. I knew about them, and thought you must have some of their stuff, especially after being in Aus for a while, but I'm a Necks novice. What albums of theirs (I see there's loads) should I hear next?

I seem to be listening to Open a lot. Not so much the sound, but the feel of it reminds me of the Koen Holtkamp solo album I have, Field Rituals - saw your post today from his band, Mountains, btw - I think I've heard that one, and noticed it had a reissue last year. That's another one for my maybe list (!)

Chief, my favourite Necks album is Drive By. Always reminds me of a late night driving through Sydney out over the harbour bridge.

Silverwater does not have quite conjure up the the same romantic thoughts for me as the title just makes me think of the prison in Sydney that I once drive past (not that I have visited) but it is a good album. I have not played their albums a lot in recent years, so have just dug them out and will try out a few this week - I have 17 of them.....

As for Mountains, their album from last year, Centralia, is IMHO one of the best of the year. Superb music.

Excellent album although alcohol consumption may impair optimum performance or listening pleasure!

S&M. For me this works so well Metallica with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra under the direction of composer and arranger Michael Kamen. Those of you that know it will know what I mean, those that don't really should give it a try.

To steal the review of Ian Fortnam - "S & M showcases over two hours of the band's best known material including the muscular thrash of "Master Of Puppets" and the devastating power of "Enter Sandman". Also featuring a pair of brand new compositions--the pounding menace of "Human" and chest-beating nihilism of "No Leaf Clover"--S & M steers clear of pompous self-indulgence in favour of sheer blistering intensity. Kamen's orchestral arrangements perfectly complement the underlying subtlety of Hetfield, Ulrich, Hammett and Newsted's singularly bombastic muse and the end result is nothing short of awesome."

It's a great visual spectacle too. A favourite DVD of mine. Well worth a watch (or two)!

Yes I should have mentioned the DVD it's great, and captures the night really well. It's so good seeing the  SFSO and Metallica actively enjoying playing together. Michael Kamen (the conductor) was the guy who penned and adapted Metallica's music for this, so a big thumbs up for a job very well done.

I always love Stravinsky conducting his own scores.

This Pulcinella is no exception. I love his rhythmic energy and direct communication.

This original 2 Eye pressing sports Milton Glaser's fanciful cover art.

Discovering Stravinsky's shorter pieces.

I get a kick out of Greeting Prelude, familiar *Happy Birthday* re-mixed by Stravinsky for Monteux's 80th birthday.

Agreed, but I do like the wall and DSOTM

Now, now boys. It gets a bit like trying to rank the best football players, doesn't it? Best done at the pub, perhaps.

I agree though The Final Cut is underrated and so is The Piper at the Gates, but I think The Wall and DSOTM are deservingly rated, as is WYWH.

High Hopes

Well it is different sounding if nothing else.

Posted on: 13 January 2014 by joerand

That could be a good thing, esp if different from the more recent releases
