Newest release from St Vincent.
Nicely recorded low noise pressing from Hungary. Kovacs/Ferenscik/Hungarian State Orchestra.
Presentation is too precious for my taste violin sounding anemic and fine lined void of any daring bold strokes.
Trax from the up and coming release
Trax from their new album.
Sample trax off his up and coming album.
Flowing yet full of drama, highly charged as you expect from Heifetz and overall enjoyable. Comparatively, the tone of his fiddle is still much bolder than Kovacs or Menuhin.
Magestic but not as ostentatious as Karajan. Tonal range is lighter than his usual but I love the confident muscline style. It is not as *all out* as Stern's but full of expression and more human reminds me of Michelangli. Full of textures and clearly deliniated stops compared to Francescatti. Munch's orchestration is equally confident and surefooted yet avoid being heavy handed or over powering. It's more of an equal partner to the soloist.
Hard to believe this was a flop at the premier. Full of personal emotions woven in, this particular Heifetz rendering speaks to me the best so far.
Frank Zappa - MAKE A JAZZ NOISE HERE - on 2cd, a live concept album.
The trouble with this set is that I am admiring Klemperer's orchestration over Menuhin's fiddle.
Full of pathos, but he always comes off fussy or whimpy or both and it seems a bit of a disconnect with the lofty grand orchestra. Altho, it's a stylistic preference but I wonder how great Klemperer/Heifetz combo would be!
Dear Kuma,
I quite agree with your assessment here.
My favourite recording of the Beethoven Violin Concerto is from:
David Oistrakh; André Cluytens: Orchestre National De L'ORTF
On EMI, and this is very much a great collaboration as is Oistrakh's Brahms recording with Klemperer conducting the same French orchestra.
I don't think Oistrakh seems ever to have made a recording that fell below the truly great!
I have had immense pleasure from the Prokofiev that you gave me the idea to get!
ATB from George
It's looking like a night of the Big Three:
Innervisions
Songs in The Key of Life
Talking Book
All on a less than tricked out Sondek but totally finding the rhythms nontheless
Chris
George,
I still haven't had a chance to listen to that *famous* Oistrakh/Cluytens yet!
And of course, his Brahms Violin Concerto with Klemperer is one of my favourite.
Wish I had the original Columbia pressing.
I am glad that you are enjoying the Prokofiev disc. I need to explore more of his catalogue. So many music, so little time.
Mozart's Magic Flute. Earlier ... I put the Overture on and suddenly realised that I had listened right through Act One totally spell bound. So I had a half hour rest and listen to Act Two.
I have no idea what the story is about. Masonic fairy-tale perhaps, but certainly not worth worrying about given the wonderful music Mozart presents us with!
ATB from George
PS. Dear Kuma. That Oistrakh Cluytens Beethoven Violin Concerto recording should definitely be on your "get soon" list! Very best wishes from George
on high res - very nice
Well, I love the cover design.
Kapell's life was cut short due to plane crush ( age 31 ), but I am not hearing anything special out of his playing in spite his legendary status.
