St. Vincent's debut album: Marry Me
Nice debut album Kuma. Did you get the eponymous album released this year?
matt,
This is my first St. Vincent album.
The other day when I was at Reckless Records, the store was playing brief but some cool jazzy bits ( "We Put a Pearl in the Ground") and I asked who it was and they told me it's from this album. Pretty tune. Very nice sounding vinyl, too.
They have warned me that this is the only tune that sounds like that out of the whole album.
The rest of album is easy going breathy *stoner* tunes and rather enjoyable but this is so Déjà vu from the Beatles era with a touch of 007 theme thrown in on some track. ( guess everyone steals from the best )
She's talented.
Do you think the last track on the Side B "What Me Worry?", does her phrasing and intonation sound a bit like Billie Holiday-ish? It stopped me dead in the tracks!

I can hear what you refer to on that track. I also have Actor and Strange Mercy. Even though I don't listen to the records all that frequently I agree that she is talented. I think the Beatles with some 007 thrown in is apt. Wish I had thought of it.
matt,
I guess I lived long enough to see things get recycled to become fashionable again.
No wonder the tune I like is different from any other tunes in the album. It was written by Mike Garson!
A friend gave me her copy of Joni Mitchell's Blue. She bought it when it came out.
Tatty jacket but the record sounds terrific. This is an excellent example of great analogue recording with a strong midrange presence.

After a hectic Monday at the office something soothing by Mary Black seemed just the tonic.
She's never really rocked my boat but maybe it's time for me to give her another listen so where do you reckon I should start?
ewemon - I discovered Mary B on the basis of a free sampler CD given away by Hi-Fi World many years ago. The article accompanying this recommended her album No Frontiers as a starter which I did and I've been 'smitten' since. Although I enjoy all her albums from the early folk-style through to the more comtemporary albums like Circus, Shine and Stories from the Steeples (all of which I would recommend), No Frontiers remains my favourite and that would be my suggested starting point, too. If you don't like that album, stop there. If you do, you'll likely want more.

I've always been captivated by the way the backing vocalists seemingly step forward ever more closely on each rendition of the chorus on the song Walk on the Wild Side. Almost spooky but a wonderful effect.

Something to blow the cobwebs away this evening.
