LP - EMI classics for pleasure ltd (p) 1971 : )

Peter Katin - piano

John Pritchard - conductor

Surprisingly entertaining, they could have moved the piano a bit closer to the microphone but the LPO are on jolly good form - very bouncy plucky with full vigour.

The Lambert & Butler Master Series sponsor logo dates this vinyl issue to pre-barcode 1979/1980, and just before digital too, i had a strong urge to rush out and buy a box of 20 king size during the Arabian Dance.

Klemperer's Mozart.

A massive infusion of hot blood compared to Szell set.

Sensible and grown up yet much more attitude and playfulness.

Perhaps lacking a bit of transluscent feel but different moods within each movement are more apparent and Klemperer gives structural solidity to otherwise *air* like tunes.

I also have a UK first pressing of this brilliant album, it all stands up just like one of those xmas cards you buy for the missus.

I love the French piano music produced in the Romantic up to the Modern Eras, Debussy, Satie, Poulenc, Ravel etc.

Interestingly Ravel was a great orchestrator of Solo Piano works, he was the one who orchestrated 'Pictures at an Exhibition', which was originally written as a Solo Piano piece.  If you see the Alfred Brendel version of this great piece then snap it up.

So what I like about the CD above is that most of the pieces were written for orchestra but the arrangements on this CD for two pianos make them all sound like they were written for piano.  There is a beautiful and melodic simplicity to the pieces.

If like me you got up in the middle of the night (7AM) because a plasterer was coming to re-plaster your living room who then phones up at 8:30AM to say they can't get to us today.  This, of course, was after you cleared everything out of your living room last night, including a pair of very heavy KEF R700s and banged your head on your up and over garage door because next door's cat was buggering about round your feet  and your back is a bit sore this morning then this CD will work wonders for you.

ps With speakers I am a great believer in that old adage 'A good big 'un will always beat a good little 'un' until it comes to moving them!
