Superb voice....

Lived in Italy for a bit in the late 80's and this takes me right back there where we played it a LOT.

It was (and still is) the best debut album. EVER. And it was released 35 years ago today, so I'm listening to it on first press Factory vinyl.

Kevin,

Mine is marked Fact 10/A and Fact 10/B in the run out grooves. Is this good, bad, or indifferent? Also both the label and the sleeve say Made in Italy. Thanks.

Freedom is Frightening by Stomu Yamashta on vinyl - circa 1973

Hauntingly beautiful - the track 'Wind Words' is one of my favourite pieces of music ever

Hi Chris,

That is an early-ish (1980) BASE Record pressing from Italy. Not too bad. If it says "Unkown [sic] Pleasures" on the back sleeve it's pretty rare as this was a misprint .

Best pressings are of course the 1979 first Factory UK (with the textured sleeve and "A Porky Prime Cut" in the run off groove, which means they were cut by George Peckham).

But some others are pretty good: the 1980 FACTUS 1 first US pressing (with textured sleeve); and the 1984 Japanese pressing (by Denon) on Factory/Nippon Columbia (YX-7337-AX).

Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun - "Special Edition"  2cd.  Bit of a twighlight zone album.

Thanks Kevin, Found it now, BASE Records on the sleeve with an address and phone no in Bologna. Sleeve is textured. Unknown spelt correctly. There's also some kind of rubber-stamping on the labels.

Anyway, just playing it now and the thirty five years are falling away.

A while since I've played this CD. One of those albums that has to be listened to in one go from start to finish with the wonderful The Knife bringing the album to a superb close at which it often feels as is a round of applause is in order.

On CD. I have liked this album for many years but rather curiously it was only when I got Naim gear that I came to appreciate the opening track Calling Elvis.  Hitherto I always skipped it.  Now it seems to have bounce and hidden depths.

The Enid -  The Spell -  on cd. I listen to this mainly for the guitar solo on the track "Summer", which is a classic.

A post by Char! Amazing!

Dohnanyi/Vienna Phil's Italian.
Pretty but dull. A light bubbly fluff.
Posted on: 22 June 2014 by George J

Dear Kuma,

Two performances to consider, as both strongly forward moving [i.e. not slow] and totally coherent.

Cantelli and Klemperer.

Strangely both recorded in London with the Philharmonia for EMI in the 1950s ...

Not the only sort of performance [a bit serious], but certainly not lightweight in spite of being firmly driven.

How right you are George!

From the start it's fresh and alive.

Youthful in outlook there is a certain innocence behind those notes.

I know I need to get a hold of Klemperere's set.

Posted on: 22 June 2014 by George J

Dear Kuma,

Klemperer is slightly less tidy and much more an old man's view [if driven with the furnace of a volcano], but with similar and inevitable result. It is shown as one of the great classical symphonies and not a romantic piece of fluff ... It is a very dark performance, apocalyptic in terms. Worth getting. Let me know your appreciation if you listen to it!

Szell would be more like Cantelli but less human!

Karajan/BOP's Italian is elegant as Dohnanyi set but less gentrified and more dynamic and gutsy performance. Unlike usual Karajan program, this is a lot less lush and smooth overall defining the score with solid shapes and structure. He stretches the slow movement longer than usual but it is a pleasant journey that easy to go along with. The final movement is still string-centric but there is more solid bass foundation.

I still prefer Cantelli's straight shootin' direciton but there is enough drama here to keep my interest.

Johnny Cash. Out Among The Stars. On vinyl from 2014. I love the fact that Johnny sings his genre with such a commanding voice and without a hint of twang.
