Bach Piano Transcriptions - 6: Walter Rummel / Jonathan Plowright (piano)
Thinking over the year that was and trying to remember my musical highlights. The list is long and sometimes one forgets the countless moments and the their meaning but with a little reminder here and there one instantly recalls the memories that were seared in our brains forever.
I love first and foremost an original composers works but have found that transcriptions are often key in helping me grow and understand a work and a composer. It is like ploughing the field to help with a new growth in the coming year. Put away all preconceived ideas and see what you discover. Last year, I finally decided to complete the Hyperion series from the Bach Piano Transcriptions.
Again, this is very specific to myself and I usually stray from things regarded as popular or universally received but the piece of music that stopped me literally in my tracks and nearly broke me is Die Seele ruht in Jesu Händen from the Cantata BWV 127, Herr Jesu Christ, Wahr' Mensch Und Gott.
Not a party piece but one that is dark, sad, introspective, mysterious and maybe even painful. An absolute joy and pleasure for me. I don't know why but it somehow affects me very directly and the connection is phenomenal. When I will think back of 2013, this is what will always first and foremost come to mind.
For this piece I even made an exception as I'm totally against downloading music or scores. I prefer and usually insist on buying the score from a publisher in a book. I don't like loose sheets scattered everywhere. For rarer and hard to find works like this I admit my desperation so I don't mind saying on this occasion bless this digital world this one time only. Ya Hoo, the printout of this music is sitting on my piano at this very moment.
My original thoughts are linked below for those interested.
