This is a great album with a typical Daniel Lanois production.

Jeff,

Why don't you contact Edna Stern directly and ask her about the availability of the "Piano Des Lumieres" downloads?

ednastern@yahoo.com

The address was taken from her website.

Thanks, Haim.  Can you share where you and Doug got your copies ?  If not, I would understand.  Thanks for the link.

A Pictures at an Exhibition:

Brigitte Engerer

This French pianist plays a bit like Samson Francois. Muscular and direct but without his wit.

She maintains excellent clarity and articulation perhaps it gets a bit monotonous when too many repeated chords are struck due to lack of colours and dynamic contrast.

This '94 premier CD release is crystal clear digital transfer with decent dynamics but hard, nasally and bright with a upper midrange glare. Mercury did not do a very good job here but it's startling to hear an extra octave on the intro of Catacomb.

Generally Janis does well on loud tunes but does not have the same reach of depth as Richter. The finale is dramatic with quite a lot of subjective interpretation going on for the maximum *effect* yet it feel rather empty. The pianist's mechanism is showing so he's certainly not as self effacing as Richter.

Dorati's Ravel version of Pictures is one of the worst I have heard.

This one is particularly on a cheezy and flashy side and I see why Richter thought it's distasteful. Too much sound effects and not enough music.

Samson Francois is one of my favourite pianist form the past.

His colourful approach where sentimentality does not take over the tune. I am not a fan of those Chopin with pink rosy overtones.

There is a wry sense of humour that runs under on every single piece he plays which is uniquely his own.

EMI was grooming him as the next Lipatti after he passed away, but unfortunately he could not control his own demon.

Great album; thanks to someone on this forum for posting it in the African music thread a while back.
