On vinyl
Rod Stewart. Every Picture Tells A Story. On vinyl from 1971. Taking a break with this and a tall glass of ice water on a hot Sunday afternoon.
Gregorian Chant: Archiv Produktion recordings from 1953-59
Pater Maurus Pfaff / Choir of Beuron Benedictine Monks Of St. Martin
Very early this morning I was in the correct mood to listen to some Gregorian chant.
Ludwig van Beethoven - Complete Piano Sonatas: Bernard Roberts (piano)
I had been wanting of listening again to Bernard Roberts for some time now (since last November actually which marked his passing) but I needed to commit about a week to the project. Today I finished this set off.
Such great and profound music that each listen after countless times still leaves me in humble awe.
I don’t hear anything new or fresh out of her interpretation. Nothing is wrong with it but sounding awfully academic and middle of the road. Not particularly virtuosic or expressive. Her sense of timing is not jiving with mine for sure as I feel she's always a bit late.
Ott does ok on a short Rondo piece ( Rage over a lost Penny; a real fun tune ) as there is not much of depth to begin with so no great skill of interpretation required. Her style here is dull as a dishwater with no sense of whimsy. Gulda or Horowitz would have had a great fun with it.
I do sometimes wonder about DG's talent scout.
The Doobie Brothers. What Once Were Vices Are Now Habits. On vinyl from 1974. I really enjoy the early Doobies; very warm, engaging music. Production by Ted Templeman who also produced Van Halen, Van Morrison and others.
Speakers Corner vinyl. Sounds bloody great - and it's amazing how many standards Mingus wrote:
PJ Harvey "Let England Shake". This is undoubtedly a very good album with a very strong guilt ridden political message which if I have to to be honest becomes a little tiring. Hence I only listen to it now and then..
This album reflects the musical sophistication of Ignacio de Jerusalem and Manuel de Zumaya, two significant composers in Mexico during the 18th century. This glorious music was widely performed throughout "New Spain," from Guatemala in the south to California missions in the north. Chanticleer is joined by the Chanticleer Sinfonia, conducted by Joseph Jennings.

Kaizers Orchestra "Ompa til du dør". Magnificent music which is just as fresh and glorious today as it was back in 2001. This album was Kaizers' debut and a smashing success in Norway. Their music is wonderfully weird and idiosyncratic; banging away on oil barrels and wheels, banjos, guitar, piano and an old pump organ. Their musical expression has been likened to a combination of Scandinavian rock and eastern-European gipsy music. The lyrics are as special as the music but the music is well worth a listen other than Norwegians.
Graham I slightly prefer the original Japanese 1st pressings but these below are as good. The prices for the Japanese versions can be through the roof.
Can't Buy A Thrill: MCAD-37040
Countdown to Ecstasy: MCAD-37041
Pretzel Logic: MCAD-37042
Katy Lied: MCAD-37043
The Royal Scam: MCAD-37044
Aja: MCAD-37214
Gaucho: MCAD-37220
They are all made in Japan for the US market but look out for the Plaid Artwork on the back as that means they are early discs.
However the Japan for Euro discs were as good.
I will need to dig out the Euro cat no. as I don't have them to hand.
I have 2 or 3 copies of most of the titles lying around the house as I have a complete set of the Japanese discs so the others I have are spares.
By the way I am hearing really good things about the latest Japanese SHM Sacd of Countdown to Ecstasy so the Platinum SHM might be as good however I haven't heard it so can't offer an opinion on it.
Graham I was going to post that those with a cat no starting 311 are usually fine as well.

Thank you very much for this info. Its a brilliant reference for any members of this forum interested in looking for the best SQ CD's of the Dan
ATB Graham.
Still listening to Kaizers Orchestra, this time their second album "Evig Pint" - which in my opinion is even better than their debut album. When Tom Waits was presented with "Ompa til du dør" he wrote this: "Norwegian storm-trooping tarantellas with savage rhythms and innovative textures. Thinking man's circus music. Way out."

First press Atlantic double LP. Listening to it because I was told the new 4LP box set was a good price on Amazon. This is so good though I think I'll just stick with this copy and save my pennies for something else.

I had forgotten that there is a pressing error on this album set. Side 2 has 'You Don't Love Me' on the label but plays 'Whipping Post' and Side 4 is vice versa. Anyone out there also have the first Atlantic pressing? I can't find anything on Discogs or in Record Collector.

Elizabeth & The Catapult - Like It Never Happened. 3rd album, need to give it more air time as I like it more with each listen.
Been having a look round the inter web net thingy at the new JB release, so decided to play this brilliant album - 1973 1st press vinyl.
