I have been listening to this wonderful album alot this week in between some other Mono albums that arrived on Monday.

Original Capitol Mono Vinyl.

Hadn't really listened so far to the high res version, while I am not so familiar with this album to really say if it's better than the original. The original was also pretty good I think and I am not such a freak to listen to them after each other. From now on i will only listen to the high res version like with every album. The only one I didn't feel was so convincing in comparison was Thriller of Michael Jackson...

Continuing yesterday's Jackie Leven theme with "Fairy tales for Hard Men" An album about the loss of masculinity - according to Rovi. Interestingly, his old punk rock band Dolls by Dolls is reunited and plays on parts of this album.

David Theodor Schmidt (klavier)

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy:

Lieder ohne Worte Nr. 1

Lieder ohne Worte Nr. 18, "Duetto"

Variations serieuses in d minor, op. 54

Franz Schubert:

3 Klavierstücke D. 946

Johannes Brahms:

6 Klavierstücke op. 118

A set of core Germanic composers all sharing a rather similar view of romantic period piano music.  I think the unique sound of Schmidt's Bechstein suits the music quite well too with its somber tone.  It is such pleasure to spend time with this music.

In fact, is there a better time of day than 3:30am to spend time with and work on Variations serieuses despite (or in spite of) the connotation of its title?   It is in d minor which is one of my favourite keys.

Just for a change. Angela Hewitt's Rameau  has always been my first choice.
