Pletnev's Scherzi:

Overly dramatic *for concert* rendition. Keyed up from very first note as Argerich but this one sounds mechanical missing on lyrical quality.

This reminds me of Kabuki theatre where every act is exaggerated and caricature like. Horowtiz does this at his concert but his style feels more natural and improv like rather than coming off pre-meditated. The dramatic build to the finale is spine tingling, however.

This CD captures an excitement of a live concert very well.

Kempff's Chopin is like coming home.

I don't know what it is but every note he plays seem to go straight to the heart.

The Very Best of Johnny Rivers. On Liberty vinyl from 1975. A nice collection of oldies I have not heard in a long, long time.

John Lennon. Walls And Bridges. On Apple vinyl from 1974. I finally got around to buying this, almost exactly forty years after the day it was released. Glad I did. Recorded during Lennon's 'lost weekend', it plays more like a collection of singles than a cohesive album. It's enjoyable, very good musically and not without some funk and mojo.

One of my favourite ex-beatle solo works.

... includes some memorable lyrics too.

Nobody loves you when you're old and grey
Nobody needs you when you're upside down
Everybody's hollerin' 'bout their own birthday
Everybody loves you when you're six foot in the ground

Leonard Cohen "Various Positions"

with Jennifer Warnes

What a wonderful artist Mr Cohen is.  Lyrics like poetry (naturally, he is),

a voice that could be considered an acquired taste juxtaposed with

some of the most sublime musical arrangements i know of.  You may

not like him ultimately, but please do try his music at least once.  In or

near his 80's, his remaining releases and his catalogue are to be treasured.

"Scary Monsters" by David Bowie. Never really been a great fan of this album - always thought of it as Bowie tried too hard, and it resulted in a thin sounding, cold and less than focused effort. Ashes to Ashes is the exception though.
