yeah i haven't been on the forum for a while, need to catch up! I got the album because of all the fuss but to be honest I'm a little disappointed. I had heard it was a mix of the xx and the singer from Florence and the machine, and it was too much of the latter for me! I can't stand that woman!

Harsh, but funny! I can't remember why I hadn't bothered to investigate London Grammar - now you mention it, maybe it was the Florence thing. I gently slated FW on here myself once, and that was long before she'd murdered one of my favourite songs, Candi Staton's 'You Got The Love'.
Harsh, I was kind! He he! The candi staton TUNE is the reason why I can't stand the woman! She ruined one of my favourite tunes ever!
Have you you heard anything close to four tet lately?

This is just fantastic! They don't make em like that anymore!

Love this - just looked some of it up. kk, In your absence, I have been neglecting all this kind of thing (especially the funk) way too much. Had to put this French beaut on for a great (sampled) Gwen vocal you probably know...
TUNE!
A good friend sent me this suggesting I might like it. So far, so good.
Cc, check this funk out

Do you mean stuff by Kieran, or (you probably don't mean) kind of like him?
Other than the twelves he made with Burial and Thom Yorke a couple of years ago and last year's free d/l album's worth of stuff, 0181, I've haven't heard much for a while, so that's at least a couple of albums I've missed.

Thanks, Not sure I can manage any Craig Charles, but I will investigate the funk. Kind of spooky seeing Joey Negro's name, as I played 'Do What You Feel' - choon - only last week (and just now) for the first time since about 1995.
Yeah it was kieren, there is love in you is one of my favourites of this sound. Meat Katie is also a sound I like if you know anything similar.
ignore the fact it's Craig Charles, some good tunes on this! Joey negro is class, have you checked out his sunshine band? Or was it you that recommended it to me?!
enjoy

Nothing like Four Tet, but inspired by some of the vocalists from previous posts, one of my most-played albums from last year...
Sounds like a dreamier Róisín Murphy in places, with lush production from Junior Boys' Jeremy Greenspan - '5785021'
Promptly added to the basket! Cheers cc

I think you are right, flettster did recommend. Is he still on the forum?

Earlier:
Faure, Requiem, Nadia Boulanger with French forces, and Durufle playing the organ, in the 1948 EMI France [Pathe/Marconi/EMI/HMV] recording.
This piece often comes across as somewhat reserved, and more beautiful than especially profound. Here we are given a treat. The recording is sufficient to convey a serious, and surprisingly powerful realisation, where the consideration is the meaning of the text quite as much as the potential for beautiful sounds ...
It is the only recording of the work I have ever liked. I played it a surprising number of times in my career on the bass, and it is one of those pieces that usually goes better in performance than on records.
Then the Two Serenades by Dvorak. The String Serenade and the one for winds and double bass. Neville Mariner gets splendid performances from the ASMR on the nigh perfect Philips recording. This was my first ever CD, and works better than every via iTunes! It is scary that I bought that CD as long ago as 1986!
ATB from George
Beatrice Rana (Piano)
There is much to like here in this debut recording from Beatrice Rana. The no-brainer for me is the repertoire. Chopin Préludes - some of the finest music ever composed. Scriabin G-sharp minor Sonata - probably my favourite Scriabin sonata. So on this alone I am pretty much in anyones court.
I usually like to think of the 24 Préludes as three groups of eight so numbers 8, 16, & 24 tend to be fabulous endings to each group. Here the f-sharp minor and b-flat minor Préludes are simply hard to beat. The d minor is OK but not as impressive. So many other highlights and too many to mention here. Also a wonderfully applied Rubato throughout.
What I like is her tendancy to use inflections (quick crescendo / decrescendos) to give rushes of energy in different pieces. In a few pieces I had a problem with her pedalling which I would personally would have wanted a more judicious use of it. If memory serves me well I would say a few examples of this would be in the a minor, A-flat major, and even the g minor among others.
You have to be aware that many of these Préludes fall into the category of super difficult to play and super difficult to pull off a convincing interpretation. Definitely in this category is the E-flat major Prélude where technically Beatrice is stunning (as with all the others) but I get the impression that she is a little heavy handed on what should come off as one of the sunniest, optimistic pieces in the set.
Did I already mention how much I like the Scriabin g-sharp minor sonata? Wonderful music that I could live with for the rest of my life. Overall, I'm am very impressed by her playing and really like this disc. My biggest reservation was occasionally the pedalling needed to be more concise or lessened (for my tastes). I could also suggest that her view of the music could be more grand or developed for the big picture (more so in the Scriabin). But understanding that she was only 19 years old when this was recorded is in itself just a stunning achievement. Technic is nearly flawless and she has some really good ideas in many areas too.

I bought this not having any idea what it would sound like and curious because of all the popularity. I'm not really a fan of this type of music. After a couple of spins I can say it is brilliant music.
