One of those groups I forget about,  and then I realise how good they were when I listen to them, brilliant group.  I saw them on their last tour, around 83 at a guess, and they were superb

Kansas. Leftoverature. On Kirshner vinyl from 1976. Another one I'm liking more now than I did during my youth. Mastered by George Marino with a very clear, uncompressed sound.

This particular performance of Lt. Kije is one of my favourite.

Excellent late 80s digital transfer with natural midrange and very little distortion. Even the opening picolo has no peakiness. ( ironically Chesky's all tube audiophile remaster shows unnatural thin and peaky wind ) Good amount of ambiance captured on this recording.  This is a good old days when  Orchestra Hall underwent ill fated acoustic *remodeling* in the 90s.. A great scale and wieght. Intro brass and tympani build is one of the very best recording I have heard. A lot more air around notes giving an illusion of  magical air in the Kije’ Birth.

Brass instruments are clear with excellent realistic bite but never harsh or distorted. Ditto for chimes and bells. Troika is warm and velvety. Well organised instrument separation brings the Kije's awkward Funeral movement even more disjointed than ever and Reiner ends it with subtle but effective whispering close. Everyone at Kije's funeral except the Tsar is going to their grave with the dirty little secret.

  • By the way when they say raw they mean raw. Do not expect studio quality overdubbed trax with perfect sq.

My favourite Who album:

and prompted by a post a couple of days ago by Joerand:

A Who album that I had forgotten even existed, let alone that I have a vinyl copy purchased when the album first came out:

And reminded again by a post from Tony (I think), I'l also play a few selected tracks from:

especially the fantastic version of 'Magic Bus'.

This is an interesting album. Its a re-release of a 1963 album by blues singer- guitarist  Peg Leg Howell who first recorded in 1926.

The SQ is amazing and so is the music.

PS - 80% of our leaves here in Minnesota are down, and it's dropping below freezing at night.  Am praying the Farmer's Almanac is right, and that this will be a warmer and drier than average winter. Ooops, please forgive my use of the "w" word.

Having grown up in Oz (land of perpetual heat and drought that seems to be on fire most of the year these days), I love a cold snowy winter. Here in Vancouver, more likely rain than snow, but I love that, too.

Hi

I have seen Matt live as well and enjoyed it very much, he wears his

influences on his sleeve no doubt, but somehow adds to that and

creates something of his own.  Plays some good guitar.

The two images above are the other items I own.  Post War on the

left and Wasteland Companion on the right.  WC was the promo tour

when I saw him live.

I would not be able to rank them, they are all very good and very

distinctly the work of the same artist.
