I saw him in concert years ago, with Beth Orton. He was pretty good. Is it a good album? Any recommendations?

I have 2 of his other albums:  'Transistor Radio' & 'The Transfiguration of Vincent'

I would heartily recommend them both.

Thanks guys.

Matt I see it has appeared up on the NPR first listen site so have a listen yourself. Personally if I didn't get a free copy I wouldn't rush out and buy it.

The solo versions tend to come across as being so much better apart from the big band versions of I Want to Drive my Car and Like you Used to Do are the 2 best tracks on the album.

Both sound almost like leftovers from his Bluenotes period.

The first spin of the day.

A nice groovy background music.

Schiff's double recording of the Diabellis, first on a 1930 Bechstein, then on an 1820 Brodman. The pianoforte is an acquired taste, but really worth the effort - and the comparison is fascinating.

Dear EJ,

The use of period instruments always requires some re-adjustment of expectations for those who are unfamiliar with their characteristics.

Just as with Bach, using an instrument of the intended type and style, can be a sometimes difficult process for those used to the music played on instruments either of a type different than the music was written to be played on, or out of the style of the time of the composer for the correct instruments.

It is always rewarding to make the effort to get into the intended timbres of the composer, provided the player is top-flight.

Your very welcome, Haim.

It was a few years ago now,

at a time when i was also exploring a very talented percussionist called, Joël Grare...

Follow is an earlier work to his superb Paris-Istanbul-Shangai,

which i will enjoy later : )

Nice one Tony. I see 96 Tears was reissued on vinyl in 2011. Would you recommend it? Thanks.

Sounds good on original vinyl, Joe. I'm sure it will be ok on reissue as long as that bloke stevewhats hisfacewilson has nothing to do will it. Teenage kicks and  great fun. It will put a smile on your face. Definitely worth a punt!
