Hi Graeme
That comparison, if indeed I am able to define it, will have to wait. This mornings listening was somewhat "background" as the spouse is still asleep and I was doing my initial morning web information updates since I was on last night.
MJQ was one of the first groups to start me on jazz explorations, which for me reached its peak in the late 90's. For whatever reason at that point I found my dominant tastes drifting to pop and indie sources.
MJQ would be one of the first recommends I would make to someone new to the genre as it is "chamber jazz", nothing dissonant, nothing brassy and blatty. Actually, if you can find it, John Lewis released a wonderful disc of the Bach's Well Tempered Clavier with some slightly jazzed variations after stating the originals. A nice combination of classical and jazz.
This drew me to them and the wonderful sound of Milt Jacksons vibes will always keep me a fan.
As far as an immediate comment, the background listening this morning was most enjoyable and I can't compare SQ as I listen to mp3 and no one here would believe me if I commented on such. Perhaps at some point I will find the time to play the releases back to back and see if I like one concert more than the other potentially as a result of song sequencing, audience intrusions, or what little I would understand as far as the differences and sources of the improvisations. I am not a musician (well, high school band 50 years ago notwithstanding) so I might have a song version preference if individual pieces were on both releases (haven't checked that at this time), but it would be because I found it more pleasant to my ear not some deep knowledge of the idiom.
I am grateful for the recommendation, it is the only MJQ in my current ownership (previously had several on vinyl), but I have access to quite a bit on Spotify when in the mood.
regards,
Jeff A
FEED YOUR HEAD VOL. 3 on c.d.
Milt Jackson
"Goodbye" (1974)
from the always good CTI label recordings
Thanks Jeff - I think you would find it a fabulous driven enegretic recording at standard 'red-book' CD quality.
I've 15 MJQ albums plus various Milt & Very Tall Band excursions. 'Dedicated...Pyramid, Blues on Bach, For Ellington, Django and of course Fontessa would be my stand outs.

Even under this mornings restrictions, I think I would agree with your "driven" comment. When I listened to "Last Concert" several weekends a go, it seemed a little ponderous, like trying to preserve a moment for history rather than enjoying the moments playing and letting it flow, as the "Dedicated" does.. I had heard "Last Concert" before but my previous listening to that concert was primarily drawn from the release "More From The Last Concert", the title of which always made me chuckle. Really, you released a "Last Concert" and didn't include all of it. A little like Cher's last tour, for the fifth time, I suppose. Marketing.
JWM has often recommended "Pyramid" here, and with your mention above I may listen to that it soon.

ps Do you have Milt's "Memories of Thelonious Sphere Monk ....." ? With Ray Brown on bass. Worth hearing.
Thanks - Milt on Monk...I'll look for that now.

Cover should look something like this:
Recorded at Ronnie Scott's I believe with Ray Brown - bass,
Mikey Roker - drums and Monty Alexander - piano.
"Round Midnight" should sound sublime on your PMC .23s
Freddie Hubbard
"Ride Like The Wind" (1982)
from a download, but was originally vinyl released
on the excellent Elektra Musician label
Cover should look something like this:
Recorded at Ronnie Scott's I believe with Ray Brown - bass,
Mikey Roker - drums and Monty Alexander - piano.
"Round Midnight" should sound sublime on your PMC .23s
£30 on the rain forest site - darn!
Listening to his 'Opus de Jazz' to pacify myself!

Ian Siegal - Meat & Potatoes (CD rip to FLAC)
Ian, IMHO is one of the best, if not the best British gigging Bluesmen around. His albums are always either at or near the top of Mojo's Blues Picks of the Year.
Edited to add a link to some of Ian's vids..

Not sure it would be worth that price, it is quite short in duration.
It looks like most all of it is on YouTube and the link above is for
the "Round Midnight" cut.
Track listing was: 1. Straight, No Chaser 2. Blue Monk 3. 'Round Midnight 4. In Walked Bud 5. Django 6. Think Positive 7. Blues For Groundhog
Cheers Jeff.

Not sure you can find it, but the disc referenced above looks like this:
Thank Jeff. I'll look for it.
A JL I'd recommend is '2 Degrees East, 3 Degrees West'.

The enhanced CD from 2007 [I'm not sure what was enhanced]. SQ is good and it's one of my favourite Air albums.
Joe Henderson
"So Near, So Far (Musings For Miles)" (1993)
songs are Mile's compositions
with Joe - sax, John Scofield - guitar,
Al Foster - drums and Dave Holland - bass

Released in 2001, two years after The Virgin Suicides and four years after Moon Safari. This was definitely a change of Air.

Joe Jackson
"Body And Soul" (1984)
Prompted by a mention by J.N. on
another thread. Haven't heard it for a while
though it was in heavy rotation 25 years ago.
