Sam Baker

"Mercy"    (2003)

Gordon (Voltaire) first made us aware of this artist quite a few years ago, this release is the first of a trilogy, the last two of which I have finally acquired and will be listening to over the next couple days.  Singer/songwriter acoustic album and Sam's voice is unusual, may not be to everyones taste.  But a quality singer and songsmith.

Streaming | Spotify @ 320kbps

It didn't buy this when it was released in 2007 so I'm taking the opportunity to listen on Spotify. It's better than I remember.

CD + Amazon dl, Steve. I really like it. Completely different from their later stuff which I find kind of too rockish for my taste.  Not sure it's worth the market price for a good original vinyl copy ATM. Do you have a copy on vinyl?

American Recordings

Orb  - Orbus Terrarum  -  on c.d.

Running through this recording are charming, but slighty creepy, cartoons; which, like a film, float above rich, substantial textures. If you were to put this on at a party you'd be asked a lot of questions. This is one for exploring the inner microcosm.

Delicate playing while I also like Lang Langs playing of these pieces

I was late joining the party on this one but I think that the penny just might have finally dropped..,

Joe Henry

"Tiny Voices"   (2003)

*******

This post by "Minky" back in 2003 pretty well sums it up:

This picks up where "Scar" left off. Henry has obviously listened to his last album and thought "I wish I had made it bigger, darker, quirkier and jazzier".

The cover is a creepy antique photograph of some grotesque circus performers standing in a doorway. It's a powerful image that leaves you expecting something dark and tortured, which is more or less what you get.

It's hard to describe the canvas that Henry paints. Think Paulo Conte's "Reveries" with lyrics by Tom Waits (there’s a song called "the ground wants you back"). The orchestration is disciplined chaos of the highest order. Here is the recipe : Start with a sinister backdrop of huge flat wobbly drums. For nostalgia add bass and alto clarinet with plenty of vibrato. Layered trumpets and far-away layers give yearning. Cut in slashes of electric guitar and swirling keyboards. For extra spice add liberal splashes of dissonance, unidentified flying objects, and sudden mix-shifts.

I don't normally care that much about production but it's hard to ignore this one. It's a huge rumbling avalanche of a thing. If you want to impress the guests or up the ante with the neighbors this should do the trick nicely.

Recommended ? Not sure. I'll let you know.

*****

Recommended by me.  Daring stuff to be savored.

Inspired by Tony's Humble Pie post

The V.I.P.s - The Complete V.I.P.s

Streaming - CD rip to FLAC

The first band Jimi Hendrix jammed with when he first came to the UK. The V.I.P.s were the (R&B) house band at Scotch of St.James' club at the time. An interesting history, the band contained Keith Emerson for a while; when he left to form The Nice, the remaining V.I.P.s changed their name to Art, and after one album changed it again to Spooky Tooth. After a couple of years bassist Greg Ridley joined the newly formed Humble Pie, and a year or so after that guitarist Luther Grosvenor changed his name to Ariel Bender and joined Mott the Hoople.
