2CD.  Various Artists,

I was not familiar with Guy Clark or his music.  He is a country and folk artist.  It came up one time on Amazon's 'you might be interested in' lists.  I do know quite a few of the performers on the album, so purchased it.

I don't have a baseline for the performances, but I like the songs.  Artists include Rodney Crowell, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson, Shawne Colvin, Emmylou Harris, & Patty Griffin,

If you want to have a decent listen to Guy then you couldn't do better than start with his absolute classic Old No 1.

Maybe need to give him another listen as I think the last time I heard an album of his was the mid 90's

From late nineteen sixties rock to something contemporary.  Not quite We Are The Fallen but damned close.

Jeff,

Have you got her husbands brilliant 2014 solo album?

Have it on Spotify Premium (US) and am enjoying it greatly.

Jeff,

It gets lots of play here since it was released.

Sadly Ben when asked a couple of months ago if he and Tracey will be putting anything out again as Everything But The Girl?

He said no.

As long as we continue to get some solo releases I will be fine.  I do enjoy them.

E,

Do man.

I bought the LP blind after a heads up from a friend having never heard anything of his before.

I was hooked after the first track.

After three runs, I feel pretty comfortable with saying that this is a great recording of Lucia. Diana Damrau is fantastic, with a beautiful voice, spot-on coloratura and sufficient power to convince. If the other singers aren't entirely at her level, that is not because they're not excellent. Calleja, Testé and Tézier have handsome voices and sing well. The live recording is almost as clean as a studio recording, although it's apparent as singers save notes in the run-ups to the stratosphere, repeats and (optional) high notes are not consistently observed, and the occasional notes are fumbled (in one case, courtesy of Tézier, badly so). The project clearly benefits from having a seasoned conductor on the stand, who listens to his singers, keeps momentum but avoids the pitfalls of making the orchestra sound like a waltz-machine (Lopez-Cobos prepared a critical edition years ago, and recorded it with Caballé as Lucia). The finale uses the glass harmonica as opposed the flute - a nice touch. Listened to in 24/48.

G,

I have just noticed a few system and speaker changes?

So far I knew her reputation but I didn't have music from here. That changed this weekend and I have no regret. Very good music combined with a dark female voice. Different from the typical jazz vocal album...

<... what has disappointed me is the recording quality in general here.  Such a let down for me and a pity as this is not the fault of the performers.  Whoever is responsible surely has avoided putting there name behind this as I could not find any details in the booklet....  Someone wanted the piano to be muted so it wouldn't overpower the cello?>

Doug,

Last page of the booklet credits Cécile Lenoir for recording and mastering. The recording was made in the teldex studio, which usually gives clean, slightly recessed recordings with minimal acoustics. On my system, the recording sounds pretty good while not absolutely top tier.

My own beef is with the variations. Why do record companies and musicians insist on being complete? The music is slight, for sure fun to play but hardly worth listening to more than once. At least Isserlis and Levin had the decency to put them at the end.

I had a second listen this afternoon (at room temperature) and most of my initial complaint seemed to have been remedied.  I'm trying to think why and all I can think of is that initially this disc would have been sitting in my mailbox at -25 deg C and I brought it in, opened it up and played it immediately.

On the second listen I felt more of the energy of the players and it got me revved up so all is well in the world now again!  As you say EJ, not absolute top tier but pretty good none the less.
