On vinyl from 1973: Gregg Allman - "Laid Back"

Released in 1973 - the same year as the release of one of my favourite Allman Brothers Band albums (Brothers & Sisters). If you like the Allman Brothers, Gregg's solo stuff is just as good!

"Hejira" - I didn't know what to make of this when it first come out (1976?). Longer songs and the rather forward bass of Jaco Pistorious. I think you have to be in the mood for this - but if you are it's wonderful.

"Shadows and Light" - another live double album. This has a band to die for but I think it drags for the most part. I think this was truncated when first issued on CD but the full version as on vinyl is now available.

"I think it drags for the most part" What?!! To quote John McEnroe, you cannot be serious! This and Hejira are both spectacular albums and Pat's solo at the end of Amelia on the live album is guitar playing of the finest calibre.

If you don't have these two albums in your collection fellow Naimites, please ignore Vlad's comment regarding these two albums. They are both stunning!

There you go, enough said. QED!

Oh dear! If we all liked the same things, it would make Christmas shopping and selling records so much easier!

I stand by my comments; Hejira IS a great album but spectacular it isn't. The songs are all moderate to slow tempo and deeply introspective. It's not an album I could play every day. The musicianship is wonderful!

On "Shadows and Light", one great guitar solo does not a great double-album make. I still think it drags!

On now to the much maligned 80's Joni..........

Regards,

Vlad

Hi Jeff. What's this one like? I've really been enjoying their latest album 'singles'

Hi

That was my second listen to On The Water, and I enjoyed it again.  Have not heard newest release so can't really comment.  I first heard of them through a local music news journalist. I enjoy pop and variations on pop so have enjoyed knowing of Future Islands.

24/96 FLAC download. I'm listening to the few hi res downloads I have to assess the recent upgrade to my Mac Mini. Playing them directly through Audirvana the upgrade seems worthwhile.

Thanks Jeff. i can recommend their latest album. Also check out their appearance on the Letterman show to see some classic dancing from the lead singer. It seems to have given them their 'big break' here's the link if it works... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ee4bfu_t3c if not just google future Islands on letterman.

Cheers

Found that video when I was originally learning about them.  Has certainly garnered them some attention.  I found an interview with him and he seems like a nice, but complex, man.  His songs are interesting.

It really pays off here to have the 92hkz version is much more airy and gives you a real feeeling. While the older recordings still genes to sound a bit thin ....

Tangerine Dream ~ Alpha Centauri

This one from a 2008 remaster of the '71 original, pre-dating their years with Virgin by about three years. Alpha Centauri was John Peel's imported album of the year for '71 and their album Stratosfear was his album of the year in '76. I never realised he was such  a big fan of theirs until now.

As others have remarked, their best years are through the 70's into the (very) early 80's culminating at around about the time of Exit in 2001.

Didn't really know him, but a great album - and quite modern for the time he created it.
