Not just 'one of them', but Esbjorn himself, in a tragic accident.

And they (EST) were, by common consent within the jazz world, on the verge of a massive "Bitches Brew"/"Headhunters"/"Koln Concert" style crossover breakthrough, which sadly never happened due to Esbjorn's death.

I really enjoyed BBC4's Funk Nite on Friday - lots of great clips of JB, Sly, P-Funk, EW&F, Ohio Players, Kool, etc.

Funk was often quite a radical music, and this was probably the most radical funk music of all. Sly & The Family Stone's "There's A Riot Goin On" (1971) - a harrowing depiction of personal and social collapse, it's not hi-fi -  tape hiss, amplifier hum and distortion is woven into the music and is an integral part of it; the rhythms are sluggish (deliberately so), the music dense and the singing uncertain and croaked.

But it is one of the finest records ever made.

Prompted by another thread on an over-regarded record from 1968, he's a brilliant disc from the same year - now that's what I call music:

Nice one Stu - just ordered it, thanks for the heads-up.

I actually had this album when I was at uni, on one side of a TDK C90 (the other side was a Fatback Band album) - played it to death. Didn't know it had been reissued...

Supertramp - Crime Of The Century

Flac 24/192

One of my favourite albums that has stayed that way since I was 14. Downloaded this from Hi Res Audio this morning. This is a must for fans of this album the hi res version is the most analogue digital recording I have heard very warm and detailed sound. Oops it's just finished playing....Think I'll start over again.

Arrived today, and cheering me up as I lie here with an 'upper respiratory tract infection' that the Doc assures me is a virus that will get better by itself 'but might last up to two weeks'. Great.

Nigel,

You are not the only one.

My son is off school coughing away in his bedroom.

I am informed by trusted sets of ears that the 2014 Ken Scott remix of 'Crime of the Century' is very good.

My order for the single CD (just the straight album) is in with The Big River Shop. Cheap at £6.99

The three LP set sounds great.

I have ordered the Deluxe CD box set today to rip to my digital dukebox .

Mr. Twin Sister

"Mr. Twin Sister"    (2014)

local music critic "Top 10 of 2014" selection

"The most interesting band in New York dropped the offbeat (and unique) cartoon sounds of their debut as Twin Sister in favor of a refined set that serves as both disco history field trip and a carefully focused conceptual submersion into identity, alcohol and the existential limits of a night at the club. It is the album on this list that needs the most attention to absorb, so it's a good thing it's also the best."
