With thanks to Gian, this is one of my "go to" albums when I am in the mood for some Van.

Happy you like it Jeff! Indeed one of my VM best imho. Both first vinyl and remaster cd sound great at my ears.

There's another record with JLH

Hi Gian, I will look for the VM/JLH above.  I absolutely love their version of "G-L-O-R-I-A" on Two Long In Exile.  Would love to hear more of them together.

thanks

Mogwai ~ The Hawk is Howling.

Sometime only more Mogwai will do for me and this one is from 2008.

Shamelessly ripped comments from another who echoes my emotions but expresses them better:

"Not everyone gets Mogwai, but that’s what makes them great. Theirs is a majestic, powerful sound where barely a word is spoken yet it is the antithesis of background music. Album and song titles bemuse, confuse and delight in equal measure and live, they are utterly unstoppable."

My favourite from Joe Bonamassa.

I put this one on to see how loud a given volume setting was, to answer a question in the streaming forum. I left it on because I haven't played it for ages. A great record.

I am just thankful at this age that I get to listen to music - any music - as thoughts of most anything else are becoming memories.  Astral Weeks, after a refresher listen yesterday, is not the first VM release I would reach for.

But I am feeling a bit frisky today after the doctor visit so, perhaps, some Coldplay later, after the medicine takes.

Actually, I think I have some EST albums you mentioned in a Spotify folder.  Time I got to that soon, I haven't forgotten.

Have a nice evening

I have been wondering how the SQ on this compares with the CD version - does anyone have experience of both.

Thanks

Not me sorry however, the music on these three albums is superb and the SQ from a digital source is good. So would imagine the CD set will sound ok.

Thanks - in fact it's the other way round - I have the CDs and I agree about the music. I was wondering if the vinyl would be an improvement. The CDs have gone through something called the No-noise system to reduce tape hiss - and no doubt interfering with other elements of the sound quality. I might get in touch with MoV who do sometimes respond to queries of this sort.

The cd has had all the life taken out of it because of the use of No Noise. Now when were talking good sounding Animals comps. Get this one and it is dirt cheap.

Thanks for this suggestion - it looks a good compilation, but initially what I want is a good collection of the early stuff (i.e. Mickie Most produced). I have contacted MoV to see if they will tell me what the source is.

Martin Simpson is a fantastic guitarist, who plays both British and American folk styles. We saw him play in the local church last year: a great occasion.

"For The Roses"     (1972)

I unfortunately missed out on their gig (part of their Magnolia Tour) at the weekend in Edinburgh. I found out about it too late and SWMBO had made previous arrangements. Has anyone managed to catch this tour?

Yes indeed, a modern day classic.

OK, not why I'm listening, but how I am listening: on old fashioned CD. While I've gradually adopted a media player-based system to allow playback of high-res files and slash the growth my CD collection while not missing out on new releases, I'm reserving the cream of the crop for the CD player. What it lacks in bits, it adds in soul - and the machine itself is way more streamlined and efficient than any computer dressed up as audio device can ever hope to be. I feel like I'm having the best of both worlds.

Herbie Hancock Quartet

"Herbie Hancock Quartet"      (1985)

Herbie - piano, Tony Williams - drums, Ron Carter - bass, and a very young Wynton Marsalis - trumpet.

This recording is from approximately the same time-frame as Wynton's first solo release.  Playing with the best.

I was fortunate to see them at the Mount Hood Jazz Festival with Branford Marsalis added on sax.  So, three-fifths of Miles Davis Quintet (VSOP era) line-up with Wynton filling the Miles slot and Branford filling the Wayne Shorter slot.
