frank black honeycomb -  on c.d.

from c.2005, melancholy songs with large doses of sweetness, without becoming lachrymose and maudlin. Quite a feat to pull off, includes some Pixiesesque surrealism in 'song of the shrimp'.

Two laptops going wrong. Noisy neighbours and builders next door. So haven't been listening much.
Apart from the weekends after a few beers then Tina sticks on loud Heavy Metal. The students have worked out not to annoy her now.

EJ,

Who's streamer are you using?

I also listen to high res media ---> vinyl.

Love this stuff, an artist recommended by Gary Shaw and seconded by Big Bill on the download thread.  If you like contemporary jazz, not to be missed.

Music on Vinyl x3

I have been wondering how the SQ on this compares with the CD version - does anyone have experience of both.

Thanks

Clive

Not me sorry however, the music on these three albums is superb and the SQ from a digital source is good. So would imagine the CD set will sound ok.

Thanks - in fact it's the other way round - I have the CDs and I agree about the music. I was wondering if the vinyl would be an improvement. The CDs have gone through something called the No-noise system to reduce tape hiss - and no doubt interfering with other elements of the sound quality. I might get in touch with MoV who do sometimes respond to queries of this sort.

The cd has had all the life taken out of it because of the use of No Noise. Now when were talking good sounding Animals comps. Get this one and it is dirt cheap.

Thanks for this suggestion - it looks a good compilation, but initially what I want is a good collection of the early stuff (i.e. Mickie Most produced). I have contacted MoV to see if they will tell me what the source is.

Hi Cbd, as I posted last week the info on the back cover states digital remasters (p) 1990 the vinyl Is mono and very flat the sq is also good in my opinion. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Quad. That's the same date as the CD but what I really want to find out is whether the MoV files have the NoNoise software.

Don't stream - I use a Bryston BDP2 with thumb drives, one album per drive. It's hooked up to an Accuphase DAC. Otherwise, no recent changes to the system.

Cheers

Haven't listened to it for a while,  Steve. I wish I had the original as it sounds a bit muffled  on Spotify.

Streaming?  You'll have to come and listen to the vinyl.

I guess I'll have to, Doc!

After an exceptional recording of Prokofiev's war sonatas, Kozukhin's Haydn is just as good. He has a knack for sustaining interest and tension in these works, which so easily devolve into empty divertimenti.

Two great bands. Amon Düül II were always a great favourite, i used to buy the records as soon they hit the shops up until Vortex. Never really liked Amon Düül I much though. I have some downloads of Amon Düül II's later stuff courtsey of the great John W - if you drop a line to their web set, John replies. He's a great guy. He dislikes facists and has similar views to me regarding Internet entrepreneurs.

Cheers Wat, and many thanks for the info. on the downloads.

It was the Tangerine Dream - Alpha Centauri post on here by Stevee_S a couple of days ago that prompted me to dig my late 60s and early 70s Krautrock albums out. I was really into that genre of music at the time, there was just nothing like it coming from the UK and American bands in those days.  Peely was always playing the new German bands then.

Although a few of my older albums have disappeared over the years, most of my Krautrock ones seem to be there; Amon Düül II, Faust, Neu!, Can, Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel, Cluster.

I used to buy all my Krautrock by either mail order from, or in person at the Virgin Records and Tapes shop in Notting Hill Gate, London; where a certain Mr R Branson used to stand behind the till....

I also saw most of the these bands live here in the Uk; Amon Düül II and Can more than once.
