Jack Bruce - Songs for A Tailor (1969)

Original vinyl

In May 1969 Fairport Convention were travelling back from a gig at Mothers in Birmingham in their van when the vehicle was involved in a serious accident - killing their drummer Martin Lamble and Richard Thompson's girlfriend Jeanie Frankyn.  Jeanie had previously designed and made clothes for Cream; Jack titled this album in her memory.

LP - Fat Possum Records 1994 : )

Buck, R.L.'s dog featured on the cover,

was killed in a drive-by shooting in late August 1993

So he did what any self respecting blues singer would do under the circumstance, and wrote a song about it...

A true classic from a grossly underrated band. Never tire of listening to this album.

Earlier this evening another recommendation for Iver's search for chamber jazz

Now listening some Liszt - this is a nice relaxing start into my last working week of the year. Pieces are also in the good hands of Marc Andre....

There isn't a bad sounding version of the disc. I have the MFSL, Japanese 1st and also the Demon UK version with the following cover.

Which version do you have the original mastering or the later remaster?

What's up Doc? a good collection from his more accessible (commercial) albums, that comprises five different incaranations of his Magic Band, from 1993.

I would be remiss to go through 2014 and not spend time with Vassily Primakov, a pianist that I admire and like very much..  It almost happened and I hope for a much more relaxed 2015 with more time so this near tragedy doesn't repeat itself.

Doug,

I will join you with my only Primakov. Clearly, his unique hairstyle is well maintained. Hopefully the same can be said about his playing. How would you compare his Seasons Op. 37 to Mr. AK-47's on the Hyperion label?

Haim,

Both are good in my books and am glad to have the choice.  However, aside from different personalities, choice of pianos, venue, recording/label styles or preferences in sound etc. if I had to choose I am going with Vassily Primakov.  In the faster sections, Kolesnikov and Primakov are fairly indistinguishable (and this includes most of the field) but Primakov, in my view, has a much more subtle touch and maybe with a few more years under his belt perhaps a more mature viewpoint explains some of it.

Again, being hypercritical since asked but I can enjoy them each on there own and appreciate the value each performer brings to the table with their own view.

Doug
