BLACK FRANCIS  -  sv n f ng rs  -  on c.d.  -  Cooking Vinyl label.

only about half an hour long, it's one of those c.d.'s I really like that comes in a carboard cover and with cardboard inner sleeve.

Ten Years After have been a favourite of mine ever since I was a student, and that was a long, long time ago. Cricklewood Green is certainly one of their best, but in my opinion (if you haven't already got it), the other album you should try to dig out is "Rock & Roll Music to the World", which has both the title track and a track that was always a favourite of mine called "Religion".

It's also worthwhile having a look at the original "Woodstock" DVD, which includes Ten Years After and a very young (and very stoned) Alvin Lee.

Not their best performance, but certainly an historic one.

They're bagpipes Jim, but not as we know them.

Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band   - Safe As Milk -   on Buddha Records c.d.

a couple of the added outtakes from this 1967 recording resurfaced on Shiny Beast and Doc at the Radar Station - quite hypnotic.

Appliance ~ Manual (1999)

A band new to me until a month or so ago this was their excellent debut album.

"Why three young men from unexotic Exeter should prove so devoted to music originally played by hairy, commune-sharing Germans some time before they were born may be something of a mystery, but there's no denying that the prosaically named Appliance have made a fine, concise debut album. Of British bands dabbling with their own interpretation of krautrock, Appliance are less raucously poppy than Quickspace and lack the jazz inflections of Fridge, but they are impeccably cool sounding."
