Now switched to the Common Linnets, only a couple of songs attract me.

Yesterday I received the " Beethoven Complete Piano Sonatas" by Claudio Arrau (Decca version).

Thanks a lot for your post.

Erich, you must mean his complete cycle from the '60s? Those are great performances, which he himself did not improve upon when he re-recorded many of them in the '80s. I personally love his later, more considered, even ponderous  recordings, too - for Arrau's carefully considered readings, and the superlative sound that Philips gave him. Copies are hard to come by, but that's part of the fun.

EJ

I would try to find one of the Philips 1998(?) edition that was issued 24b a/d, that also incudes some concertos and a Rondo.

I understand that  Arrau was recording for Philips the complete set again but the project was not finished because of his death in the early 90s. I don't know if that set was published or not.

Regards.  Erich

P.S. Now enjoying CD1, Sonatas 1, 2 & 5

Hi Erich,

Great to see a fellow Arrau fan. All boxsets that have appeared under the Philips and Decca banners are in fact the 60s recordings that you have. The later set wasn't completed, and the incomplete set has never been issued in a box. If you're interested, you need to look for the eight discs of sonatas that appeared separately (long out of print, sadly), plus one sonata that appeared on the disc with concerto #3 (with Colin Davis at the helm), plus the two discs of Beethoven sonatas that appeared as part of the 'final sessions' series. I do hope Universal will come to their senses one day and collect Arrau's complete Beethoven legacy.

Cheers,

EJ

Well. actually the later set was issued in a box, this one:

The sonatas no.s 14 and 29 are from the 1960es set, as Arrau did not live to rerecord them.

Thanks, that is good to know (although not exactly cheap).

John Mellencamp. Rough Harvest. On HDCD from 1999. Alternate studio and a few live versions of Mellencamp's favorite songs. Largely acoustic guitar and fiddle driven. Simple and fantastically musical, this album highlights Mellencamp's talents.

Neil Young. Old Ways. 2000 remastered CD of the 1985 album. Neil, Waylon and Willie are 100% country on this one. That'll do me for a while .

Elton John. Honky Chateau. The MFSL CD of the 1972 release. My only MoFi CD and other than having to turn up the volume, I'm not sure I hear anything particularly special about it.

Just played an excellent new wave album from an original Buzzcock

Real Life by Magazine with Howard Devoto providing all of the lyrics. Forgotten how good this album was.

Wow... how long ago was that!? Must dig it out from the back of the album box.

Yes, certainly the most significant improvement compared to what I have already on vinyl, but Tonight's the Night is special as well, I thought.

Great band! I still think Mike Portnoy is one of the best drummers ever.

Thanks for letting me know, I do not have his Bach recording.

If you like accordion performing classical music two outstanding disc which I highly recommend are Stefan Hussong playing the English Suites (very hard to get) and Janne Rattya doing Scarlatti sonatas.
