JB's Elgar live recording a few months before his death.

Pouring of emotional bursts and rhythmically charged all the way through. His orchestra in a top form giving him 200%.

Posted on: 23 December 2014 by kuma

Boult's Prozac laced same Elgar tune above ( in the south ).

Everything is polished and well sorted but undoubtedly boring.

And Solti's Wagnerian version.

A great dynamic contrast between the slow movement and the finale but Solti’s handling isn’t very personal. No sense of rhythmic pulse so it’s tedious and labourious.

A rare combination of strength, depth and beauty. The BIS sound is clear and dynamic, no surprises here.

I never liked much else of his work apart from this one. You may want to try listening to his brother Christy Moore who I think is a far better songwriter. If you do try his Ride On album and move out from there.

Bit of trivia for here. His real name is Barry Moore and this was his 4th album but his second under the Luka Bloom title.

Red Hot Chili Peppers. Stadium Arcadium. 2 CD set from 2007. I typically start with the first CD, Jupiter, and sometimes never get to the second. Tonight I started with the second CD, Mars. Glad I did. Gained a new appreciation for the music there.

Exploring more recent classical scores.

James MacMillan is a Scottish composer.

Veni, Veni, Emmanuel, percussion concerto is composed in the mid 90s.

This CD release is above average sonics but it's a bit of a let down especially after hearing the live concert. What's shown in this pix is just a 1/3 of percussions used on this score. It's interesting that there are a ton of colours and textures from percussive instruments. Mostly MacMillan did not use some percussion to play melody even tho they can ( like Marimba or vibes ) keeping them strictly as rhythmic accents and patterns.

Bought this in a package - thought new let's try it, after listening to some excerpts. I think this will need more time to get acquainted to. It sounded to me a bit like Debussy but then much less lyrical....., tones hanging too much into the air.

But as it was just before my long Christmas travel I should perhaps not rate it based on that.

now snitch to Ibanez, same artist....

I like this one as well, I think after a recommendation of EJ. I also have the other one and also have this one more often playing.

Switched now to this one. very nice with the right level of dynamics - loud when it's needed, which is sometimes forgotten by some players who play this overall to sweet. While not the best recording I know of this piece, it's definitely also not a throw away one.
