So good I played it 3 times in a row.

Purchased today with an Xmas gift voucher from HMV.  Rather strangely, given its fame and age, I've never owned this album before.  While My Guitar Gently Weeps must be up there among the Beatles' best songs.

Revisited Goode/Fischer's Concerto pieces.

Still dullk and strictly middle of the road.

Vinyl "reissue" from this year.

Muti's Philly year Beethoven is certainly much livelier than what he's been doing at the CSO last few years.

Less chunky and more expansive for Beethoven.

I would scrap Radio three tomorrow if I was in charge. There is no shortage of classical music to stream without this constant drip-drip negativity ...

ATB from George

George,

I've only just seen this post and its predecessor. I've been a long term listener of BBC R3 CD Review, and Record Review before that. Obviously I don't take it quite as seriously as you, and I certainly don't throw out all the recordings I have which are dismissed by the reviewer, nor do I rush to buy his recommendation. But I do find it interesting to compare and contrast short sections played back to back to see if I hear the point being made by the reviewer. On the rare occasion where a piece is reviewed which I don't have at all in my collection, I will listen to the R3 recommendation as well as reading various reviews before making my selection. At least with CD Review it's possible to listen to (at least part of) the recording, whereas with say the Penguin or Gramophone guides one can only read the opinion of the reviewer.

And please don't dismiss Radio 3 generally, and certainly not in favour of any streamed broadcast. BBC R3 on FM is part of what makes Britain British!! Live broadcasts in the evenings on R3 FM can sound astonishingly realistic. Not so for steamed music, which sounds lifeless by comparison. Or are you advocating that choice is more important than sound quality? If so, why are you using a hi-fi forum?

Good, while I like also the Queryas version a lot

..and not comparing it to the Du Prie version

Riccardo Chailly - 6th of Beethoven with the Gewandhaus Orchester Leipzig. While the tonal balance is corrreCt. I personally like the 6th a bit more in a slower tempo and with a little gentle touch. While for the other symphonies Chailly's approach might work, I would prefer Karajan or Abbado.
