Gauntlet Hair-Stills On the black stuff.
Arrived in the post today. I was introduced to this album recently by Mike1380 and his vinyl recording sounded stunning on his newly upgraded LP12. I sought out a CD version and Mike's advice was to go for an early version from the eighties. This German Phonogram CD is from 1988. I was prepared to be disappointed but instead I've been delighted. The quality is excellent and the soundstage, particularly on The Race, is absolutely enormous! Can highly recommend this one.
Stu turned me onto this one a couple of years ago. I now have the original vinyl and CD rip. It's certainly an album to give your system a good workout. Vinyl wins I'm afraid.
An excellent past recommendation from Dr Blues...

Great great album.
Picture the scene. A Linn demo (of something with a 'K' in its name) at my local dealer in the late 1980's. I remember a fair bit of classical music being played with the Mahler Brigade in the front row getting a fair go with nodded and muted approval. Then a young bearded gentleman at the back of the room, quietly said "Can I hear this please?"
Man oh man! It was my introduction to the American spanker of the axe and I loved it. Controlled audio mayhem, heavy on the overdrive pedal. The Mahler Brigade were er ............. perplexed.
The original 1987 CD on the Relativity label sounds superb. The 1997 remaster on Epic does a very effective job of robbing the sound of life, space and dynamic swing. Situation normal.
John.
Another bargain from Amazon. 4 CD box set for £9. Working my way through after ripping. This isn't the usual 'anthology', 'greatest hits' compilation but a really good mixed bag of alternate studio takes and some unreleased material mixed with a smattering of original tracks. The SQ is good which is always a bonus with this type of CD.
Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto, Kyung Wha Chung, Montreal Symphony Orchestra under Charles Dutoit on vinyl. This is my favourite version of this piece, better IMHO than the version she recorded earlier with the LSO under Previn.

Steve,
You need to find a mint copy of Baby on original wafer thin vinyl.
Then you will really find out how good they can sound.
I found a really good copy for Debs a while back.
They are like hens teeth though for not stupid money.
Tony M has a original copy.
Next time you are up for a visit get him to give you a blast through the DBLs.
I am going to give it Lontano LOUD tomorrow night because the people next door can't moan on account of it being New Years.

John.
Nicely described John. I listened to this the other evening albeit on an HD download which you weren't keen on. I shall have to get an '87 CD and rip it to make a comparison as my memory of the original I had (and lost) many years ago is a distant memory.
"American spanker of the axe" - loving that description.

John,
Have you heard the latest CD album collection box set?

I must confess to never having heard of him, John, but am intrigued enough to give its go. And with your very helpful information on what CD to go for and a quick browse I'm pleased to say I think I've tracked down an original '87 version and ordered it. With p&p it is still less than £8.
I'll report back.
E,
Is that the normal standard brilliant quality SF SQ ?

I suspect you're right, Steve, and having heard Mike1380's original vinyl first was the very reason why I was prepared to be disappointed in the CD. I'll be interested in Mike's take when he gets to hear The Race on my CD-based set-up. I have resigned myself to the brutal truth that a number of his vinyl versions trounce the best I can find on CD e.g. Hendrix's Electric Ladyland and the first three Led Zep albums. But I know from experience vinyl is not immune to disappointing pressing, too. The trick of course is to just enjoy the music and try to avoid analysing the deficiencies.
While I don't think this is her best album, it does display very well the unique style of Patricia Barber. A very special jazz vocalist, makes every. Song her own, in the same league than Cassandra Wilson
I am going to give it Lontano LOUD
Stu, try this one Lontano loud. Fab pressing, beautiful box set. First heard this on some huge KEF Blades with Boris in the room himself - mind blowingly good

UK Press (Sonet). Nice mix of funky boogie blues.
On the bonus disc, now.
I am going to give it Lontano LOUD

Adrian,
I still have the photos of you at the album launch party.
I didn't get round to buying the vinyl though.
I take it you made it the next day and got one?
On vinyl, Abbado's final concert - a super Bruckner 9

I did, and Boris was at the store there too chatting away. It is worth getting, it's limited but not cheap...
