 Right right.

But he'd get kick out of it if he was around when the modern piano was around!

Plus Perhia plays piano. not violin or harpsicord on the recording I was listening.

NOw Glenn rocks on Beethoven PIANO forte CONCERTO No.1 !!

Concerto I in D minor, BWV 1052

This harpsichord concerto is thought to be based on a lost violin concerto in D minor which was later arranged as an organ concerto in 1728 for use in two of Bach's cantatas; the first two movements for the sinfonia and first choral movement of Wir müssen durch viel Trübsal in das Reich Gottes eingehen, BWV 146 and the last movement is in Ich habe meine Zuversicht, BWV 188.

Doug,

This CD contains the original *lost* violin Concerto No.1 reconstructed.

Intuitively, I thought the violin was strange for the No.1 but surprisingly it's fairly close to the piano set. Rhythmically alive and extremely well tuned bouncy performance in spite the string instrument as a solo. I miss a bit of percussive impact at the tail end of Allegro but that's just my habit for being familiar with a piano version. Adagio works in favour for violin with sweet sensual legato melody giving a pining quality.

Oddly, tho, I still prefer Gould's Concerto 5 over this violin version but possibly I just like the way Gould plays this particular piece. ( there is a lot of *him* but he just makes the music more accessible for me )

This is an interesting CD which several of familiar keyboard concertos transcribed to another instruments.

Since Bach wrote so much, he had to recycle some of it i bet.

It's interestring what you speak of Bach as a man.

Have you seen this BBC documentary about Bach's life?

I don't buy the analysis by the *pop* shrink in the film, ( Bach had possibly a paranoid personality disorder?! ) but it is highly unlikley that his personality isn't affected by being orphaned at age 9. Serious trauma for a child.

One of those films you can watch again and again,

and it's almost time for my next viewing.

I keep hoping to see an alternative ending where they get away with it : )

He seems the most comfortable with Prokofiev program.

I am not so sure about this *heavy weight* Bach or *take it or leave it* Beethoven PC1.

This album cover seems so reminiscent of some of Pink Floyd's. Anyone know if there is any connection? I did a quick google but could not find anything on it.

I've got that on vinyl char, superb! Beefhearts "moonbeams" is another favourite although I read somewhere that Don Van himself felt that it was his worst.
