best set up for NAS music server, apps, and file format for 172XS?
Posted by: Big York on 01 January 2014
Hi there, wonder if anyone can provide me an advise of setting up the whole environment that works better with NAC-N 172XS?
I recently got a 172XS to replace the Roku M1000 but the 172XS does not work well with my current set up. I have a NAS to store the audio files which all in multitracks wav+cue and the server comes with the NAS are only Squeezebox center or Twonky.
Since I prefer per album per file, I have tried to convert multitracks wav into one Flac with tag, however, it is not working. I can read the single tracks information on the n-Stream or Bubble but can’t pick a single track to play, it always play from the beginning.
It’s there any apps that can support multitracks wav+cue or Flac with Twonky or LMS on Naim 172XS?
OR
I have to convert wav into single track FLAC to make it works?
Any kind of combination (music server, apps, and file format) that is the best for my environment (NAS + Ipad or Andorid + 172Xs)?
Many thanks, wish you all have a wonderful year of 2014!!
Hey Big York,
I don't know the answer to your question, but am highly interested in what is would be. Personally I never rip into multitrack wav's or flac's, and keep all tracks as individual files. It prevents me from having to use cue files and other stuff.
Of course a solution for you would be to re-rip you CD's. If the number of CD's is not too high, this could be done in a reasonable amount of time.
Why do you rip into multitrack WAV ? Any specific reason ?
Cheers,
Iver
Hi York,
There are plenty of solid combinations to stream music to your Naim player. Which brand nas do you have? Twonky certainly seems to have the worst reputation here. Assett upnp server on the other hand seems to have the best.
Your difficult issue is, I think, going to be finding a UPnP server that supports serving individual files from the cue sheet format. And that runs on your nas. Serving files from that format is all about the server software -- nothing to do with the player or control software. The server has to want to do it. I did some Googling and didn't see much other than JRiver, but undoubtedly you've tried Googling up an answer too
The Naim streaming solution only works with the Naim app. Naim does not support Androids.
Not exactly accurate. Folks report good results (and at least one has reported difficulties) using Bubble on Android devices. Naim does not support it, but Naim streamers are compatible. There are other alternatives such as Namote and UPnP Play. I've never tried any of them, but one is not totally locked out of using Android devices; there just isn't a Naim app from Naim for them.
I've been an iPhone guy for a while anyway, so this has not affected me personally.
Thank you all for the advise;
To Iver:
I tend to rip the whole CD into one single WAV since some albums don’t have gap between tracks.
To Bart:
I am having Synology DS410J and ZyXEL NSA325. Both offer Logitech Media Server and NSA325 also have Twonky. The LMS works fine with Roku M100 with Wav+cue, but when it comes to 172XS and n-Stream, the wav+cue is not working.
JRiver might be an option (assuming it support wav+cue) but I require turn on a PC instead only NAS.
To Wat;
Havn’t yet thinking of getting a UnitiServer or a VortexBox but try to get the most out from what I have now. BTW, the dealer only has some basic knowledge about streaming and does not have too much experience in NAS environment.
Build a simple Vortexbox server or use Minimserver on a MacMini would be my recommendations.
Whatever you do - get rid of Wonky.

JRiver seems to have Windows and Mac versions right now. Linux (for some nas) to come.
LMS is not a 'true UPnP server.' It is not meant to serve files to UPnP players, but to Squeezebox-type players and other devices that run their software. Trying to use a Naim player with LMS won't be satisfying; like trying to speak Albanian in the heart of Tokyo (you get the idea). I am 99% sure you need to give up on LMS with a Naim player. Whether that leaves any UPnP servers that are happy with single file rips and .cue . . . I don't know but the answer may be "not at this time."

I have managed to use LMS through my Vortexbox server - it works fine as UPnP in this way - I just don't see any advantage to it unless you are also using Squeezeboxes. I do remember Slimserver with some fondness before the rot set in - without those guys I doubt we would be streaming to our Naim gear right now.

Tog -- does Vortexbox re-format from the LMS server format, or do Naim devices natively 'listen to' LMS? I did not think that they did, but I don't want to mislead the OP!
Wat:
I was having a related discussion with my local dealer on Tuesday. The customers want whole-house audio and video . . . servers . . . . they hear and read about all this fancy technology and call the high-end hi fi dealer and say, "Install it and I'll pay for it." The dealer has on staff people who really know this stuff. But the customers CANNOT maintain it. We all have more or less technology capabilities, but the "average" customer's capabilities are low. As soon as the power blinks, or something needs an update, etc etc, the average customer is lost. They can't reboot a server. Or whatever minor thing is causing the glitch that is preventing them from hearing music or watching their movie. Then they get mad at the dealer.
Your point is a good one too. Some dealers are NOT versed in all of the related technology.
But where these two points intersect is . . . does a hi fi dealer want to get involved in setting up pc's and nas's for customers, and then being on the hook to maintain them? The answer is a resounding "NO." My local dealer has been in the whole-home custom networked music business for years now. They teamed up with a pc builder to spec out a "Silent Music Server PC" with a high-end sound card, etc etc., years ago. But they do not sell it; the customer orders it from the pc builder. And they do not service it, the builder does. They are HAPPY to see Naim and others get into the server business. They want no part of maintaining home networks and computers and nas'es for customers. But customers often need help, and there is the void.
My dealer does not regard helping a customer set up (and thus maintain) a home network and a nas as built into the price of a UnitiServe SSD. I don't blame them.
LMS broadcasts as a UPnP server under Vortexbox.
