Worst cover versions - "in the world!"

Posted by: Tog on 04 January 2014

After an evening listening ( slightly drunkenly ) to all the available cover versions for "Love will tear us apart" the worst version by far is the one performed by Brazilian Lounge Project- so bad it gives lift music a bad name.

Sorry, ignore that, Paul Young sings a version significantly more awful than that - should be worth a prison sentence ......

What is the worst cover version of a great song have you have come across?

Scissor Sisters...Comfortably Numb.

A hideous upbeat take on a deeply moving song.......dreadful

+1  Excrementally bad.

+another, Arfur. Truly appalling. Makes the original just so much more satisfying.

I wonder what people who hear and love the cover version first then think of the original?

Hard to beat(?) William Shatner murdering "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds".....although he's certainly tried to with other covers he's made.

Good question!

I wonder if anyone who loves the cover has actually considered the lyrics and thought 'they seem strange for this tempo'. ....................................probably not, in fact I wonder if The Scissor Sisters had ever heard the original? It's not that they're a poor group and have murdered it vocally, far from it, but if it were not a cover version, who in their right mind would put those lyrics to that 'beat' ?

Makes the antipodean paint jugglers version of Stairway To Heaven almost bearable.

+2. I'd never heard it before but just goggled it up on YouTube. Unlistenable. In fact, unrecognisable. Utter garbage. WTF?

Try Katherine Jenkins version of 'No Woman No Cry', if you dare!

I don't think it's too bad, really. I've heard far worse covers, even worse covers of Floyd songs. At least the Scissors tried to do something new with it.

Madge's "American Pie" is hard to beat, but I think Limp Bizkit's cover of the Who's "Behind Blue Eyes" is an utter abomination. Ed Sheeran's appalling, whiney cover of the Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" is another absolute stinker.

Try the Queen Album by Elaine Paige. if you can get through that without rolling about laughing you're a better person than I.  It's full of the worst covers ever.
