Anyone using MinimServer?
Posted by: Peter W on 05 January 2014
I have recently installed MinimServer on my QNAP NAS to see what it can do. It is indeed very flexible and can do all I want a server to do, except one thing - it does not support multiple genre. I tried both FLAC and WAV files but still no luck. From what I read on various forums it seems that MinimServer is indeed not designed to support multiple genre.
Has any MinimServer user managed to make the same track appears under different genre views? With Twonky I just have to put a comma between genres.
Try using a custom (user-defined) tag. Something that will handle a "string value".
Thanks. I will try this weekend.
Hej,
use a backslash "\" between the genres. This will work.

I downloaded MinimServer last evening (and am pretty well pleased with myself for having done so, given my (lack of) computer skills) ...
... and started using it this morning (the NAS required a reboot to activate the MinimServer program).
So far: the interface appears more user friendly than that of TwonkyMedia (hardly difficult) but is still nowhere near to the ease-of-use/flexibility that was Logitech Media Server. But it's early days ...
Initially I'm finding, with both Twonky and Minim, that the Streamer keeps dropping out and the Server icon fails to appear, requiring me to go out of and re-load n-Stream on the iPad. Is this an n-stream issue or a weakness in both of the Servers?
It looks as if I'm going to have to do a lot of re-jigging of my library (again) - nearly 41,000 tracks - unless there's a way to get into the set-up so as to adjust the recognition of tags (e.g. LMS recognises ";" as a separation of artists, etc. Presently I have, e.g., artist Frank Sinatra appearing numerous times dependent upon his accompaniment: Nelson Riddle, Billy May, Gordon Jenkins, etc.
Also: the total number of tracks appears overstated and wonder whether the Server, n-stream or NDX is "at fault" (i.e. I've got a setting wrong somewhere!)
As I said: early days ... and the music via the NDX sounds wonderful.

Hi Mitch
Ive recently moved over to minimserver and have found it hugely flexible, and so far it has been able to over come all my tagging issues.
Join the minimserver forum and Simon will respond in no time. I dont think he ever sleeps.

FWIW, I tried Minim and Asset and preferred the latter as it easier for me to use. You might want to look at the 30 trial
I had one issue with Asset similar to yours with Minim. It refused to see files like "Nelson Riddle - Route 66" and stopped after Riddle. The answer for me was to replace " - " with " ~ ". This might just work for you with Minim. Worth a try? if that does work then use a bulk renamer utility to find and replace all those you need to change. Should not take long
I have tried both as well, they are both good apps. I am currently using Asset.

Cheers, Graeme, I did so last evening (whilst working through the guidance notes). I shall continue to play with the interface to get some understanding before I raise any specific queries. But, yes, I see from other comments that the site's proprietor is very good at replying.

Very strange , i've just tried to download minim server on my macbook pro and it won't open the file as it says it is from an unknown developer? Please help.

Go into your OS X System Preferences and click on Security & Privacy – there you can change the settings that'll allow you to run it. When you've run it once, it'll remember, so it's best to change your settings back, to prevent accidental running of dodgy software.
This is an OS X thing, and it's for you're own security; it's nothing to do with Minim.

Nigel
Thanks Nigel i'll try that .
Lesson learned ! Don't try and rush things and always read the instructions fully.

This is a new Mavericks 'Security' feature I believe. If you right click (two finger) and select 'Open' from the drop down, this allows you to open apps from unknown developers.
Have download and installed minimserve on my QNAP NAS. Is there meant to be a browser interface as whilst it is working there are no settings that I can get at.

Just install MinimWatch and you will be able to do all the settings there.

I tried a\\b, a \\ b, a\ \b, etc., but still could not get multi-genre working. Thanks for your help anyway, Reinbert.
For classical music I will have to stick with browsing by folder which works alright for now.
try a semicolon between items - works for artists & composers etc

Hello Peter,
now it is clearer for me how it works. It is not a problem with Minimserver but how to edit files. I use MP3-Tag. http://www.mp3tag.de/en/ This editor make more than one Tagfield with the same name when you write two backslashes into one Tagfield. For example if there is an entry a\\b into genre there will be two tags like genre=a and genre=b. This works fine with Minimserver. Only for the Albumartist-Tag it is impossible because it have to be unic for the Minimserver. So please have a try with MP3-Tag. I hope you have windows. If you use Apple have a look on Kid3. There you can easaly duplicate Tagfields.

Hi Reinbert
I used Kid3 to add another genre field and that worked! Thanks so much for your help.

I like Minimserver as it runs from my QNAP and I don't need to dedicate a computer for it (like Asset).
It can transcode FLAC --> WAV on the fly which Twonky does not do (but Asset does).
My biggest complain on Minimserver is inability of picking up a new track on the fly and it needs restart/rescan every time I add a new track. Very annoying.
Twonky is doing this just easy.

Actually I find Twonky's auto detection of new entries not that reliable so I have it disabled and will do a manual rescan everytime I add new album to the QNAP. But sometimes whilst sitting in the listening chair I realised that I had forgotten to do the rescan, I will just do it on my iPad via the web browser. Just a few taps and job done. There's no web interface for MinimServer so I must turn on the PC to do it

You can do a rescan from a web page on ipad with minimserver too. i use this as a backup if i forget to rescan via minimwatch when i add new tracks to my NAS. The rescan only tacks a few seconds unlike Asset.
just do http://ipadress of Minimserver:9790
AMA, you might like to try installing the MinimServer Auto Restart package, which detects additions or changes to files in the music library and automatically restarts the server, after which the changes are scanned and reflected in the library. It works well for me on my Synology NAS. There's a thread on this package in the MinimServer forum.
