Did you rip your full CD collection?

Did you rip your full CD collection or were you selective?

I'm looking at some of my Rory Gallagher CDs where I have the castle release, the 1999 remaster ad the 2012 remaster. All sound different so worth ripping all.

Yesterday I ripped an original CD version of Rubber Soul, well because it's the Beatles.......

Now I'm coming to The Smiths The Queen is dead and the remaster is so much better than the original CD release and I'm wondering will I bother?

what did you do in similar situations?

I ripped my favorite version. There were some CDs I decided to throw away without ripping!

However, I don't have multiple copies of all that many albums. Never saw the point, especially if I had the vinyl.

John,

I would just go with your preferred one. When using nserve you then won't have the problem of possibly seeing multiple copies of albums and not sure which to go for !

Yes I deal with this question -- do I want every version, and every cd, in my music library on my server??

If it's something I just know I won't listen to, then, "no."  And if a remaster comes out, or I find one, that sounds a lot better and displaces another version, then I am happy to delete the other version.  To some extent, cluttering up the interface with stuff I'll never listen to is distracting.

Due to the quantity involved, it was done in about 6 months but I started off prioritising what I want to rip but eventually gotten around to ripping most of them

I ripped my full collection of 6000 CDs on to my QNAP to play through the NDS. It was worth the effort although a little disappointing by the ones that wont rip due to being copy protected.

The cd you do not rip will never be ripped Again, so the decition has to be made before the cd goes far away to the worst case backup destination.

I have only bought a remaster a few times, I really do not want to  pay for the same thing over and over Again, and some remasters are close to or sometimes worse than the original cds. The only remaster I have bought that was worth payinf for again, was the Peter Gabriel plays live. This was released in a amputated one cd edition, but later sold in the full 2 cd version with much better sound.

I use dBpoweramp so can specify names like Remaster, MOFI, or Original etc.

I leaning towards streaming most every iteration and perhaps selling or binning what I don't consider worth ripping.

I edit album names so I know which is which   I add "MFSL" etc. This is easily done with nServe.

There are two types of person:

One whom backs up their data.

One whom is about to learn the importance of backing up their data.

I have ripped everything and I will have to rip it again when I am going to go onto the streaming route (I have ripped for itunes so far). I am not looking forward to this - given the huge collection and the fact that the tagging is always sub optimal and needs a lot of rework.

Sloop...That can be a tricky one, the original CDs can mean a lot to some people, very sentimental. I have the original Beatles CDs, they mean a lot to me. They have been ripped, and are stored on my NAS. But, I now have all those albums in 24-bit FLAC that were remastered in 2009, and the sound is far superior. However, I will keep both as I'm a sentimental sort of guy.

I ripped the lot. I have preferences but I wanted them all to be accessible via streaming. I have subsequently deleted some 16/44 stuff and sold the CDs, having acquired what I consider to be superior 24Bit versions, although some of my CD rips beat the HiRes versions and have stayed.

I long for the day that we can pol all of the rips we have done, in various formats, and then bulk download... I just finished 1000+ CDs over the past several weeks, and it does become a bit OCD like... Either that or a bureau service, send them all off and have them done in India overnight!

I ripped the Smiths remaster box, and sold the original ropey sounding CDs for £1 each in the local second hand record shop.

+1 to all those who've said:

Do it all, in the order it is on your shelf, or you'll never get to it, or remember what you've done. If you don't like a CD, don't rip it and just get rid of it now.

Use something like dbpoweramp and take the time to edit the data as you go.

I *thought* I did a decent job on the metadata and art, but now where I didn't do a great job, its driving me nuts.

Yep, all 974 albums got ripped. When ever i buy a new CD - and am currently on about 12 a month, then it gets ripped and then stored.

i do have many duplicate tracks, but some clearly sound better on some masters than others.

I have ripped about 1,200 albums which represents most of my CD collection. After the initial excitement of the new equipment which led me to rip a few particular favourites, in general I ripped through the collection A-Z by category.

I have several favourite albums where I've purchased numerous remastered efforts - I think this is because I'm always trying to experience again the joy I had the first time I heard the album. In most such cases I have just ripped my preferred master. The only case where I ripped every copy I have of one album is Yes's 'Close to the Edge' and I only did this after getting Steven Wilson's remix. (In the end I prefer the Rhino remaster, although best of all is my original vinyl copy.)

In a similar vein there are some classical works of which I have several different recordings, always trying to find the 'definitive' version. But in this case I've ripped every version even though I only ever seem to play my overall favourite version.

There's nothing wrong with using the correct word. We Smiths lovers have a good grip on the Queen is Dead's English.

I did rip everything, took a while but still thinks it`s was worth it, sometimes you just want to hear "that" song.

Today i work to replace all of my favourite albums with better masters, so HDtracks.com and really good vinyl rips slowly replacing them, thank good i got almost 10TB plus backup in the fileserver

I'd totally agree that the real disappointment are the ones that won't rip.

Now that I use my HDX as my preferred source & with greater access to more albums than ever before (yes including more than one version of some albums), I still wish that the pile of CD's that wouldn't rip could be added to my network.

When I first ripped my collection via Vortexbox, there were quite a few that would not  rip. However, over time and subsequent Vortexbox updates (including a new Vortexbox), all but one of those have now ripped successfully. The persistent unsuccessful one is James Blunt. I haven't lost much sleep over it
