Will aerial replacement make any difference?

Posted by: JSH on 10 January 2014

I get a rating of poor to marginal from my Qute2 when I go into the Qute's site.  That said, I get very few break-ups other than with big 24/196 files

Will changing the aerial on the back to one of the 12dB gain ones on the net make any appreciable difference please?  Or is this not recommended for some reason?

Please do not tell me I should be wired; maybe, but that is not feasible in this environment.  Wireless or a through the mains system are the only options I have

Many thanks

Why not try Naim's WA5 high-gain antenna? Not much cash and guaranteed compatible. It replaces the standard WA2 and has an xtra 5dB gain.

Thanks; that's certainly a possibility. What are the compatibility issues here?  I don't quite understand

Wouldn't a 12dB gain antenna give an even stronger gain?

Sorry I thought when you mentioned "not recommended" that was a reference to not changing the signal level to the wireless stage.  A 12dB gain is greater, but I don't know whether those figures are as reliable as Naim's own stated gain.

Fair point.

I suppose the answer is suck it and see.  We're not talking big money here and provided no damage is done to the unit I've little to lose

I tried a cheap high gain aerial on my Uniti and it did help a bit with buffer emptying when I was using wireless (I've now bit the bullet and cabled up).

An aerial is an aerial and I can't see how Naim's will be radically better than any other one. As you say it's very cheap and easy to try.
