Yearly Purge
Posted by: MangoMonkey on 11 January 2014
About once every year, I go through my CDs and choose atleast 10% if not more that I can get rid of. This year, I'm cutting deeper than usual - Selling off about 30 cds.
I expect to get about $10 for these. Enough for coffee and croissant. :-)
I try to keep my collection to around 100 cds - give or take.I'm not counting how many I've got left.
With a yearly purge, I figure I'll have only my favorite 100 cds.
Wondering if anyone does this?
Divide it by how many albums (CDs) you own. If the number is greater than 30, something is amiss and you should consider listening more to music instead of kit.
Still no answer as to why 30 is the magic number which means you need to own in the region of 6000-7000 albums to justify a "Statement" system.
My score is 10 and I can't justify, or understand, why I need to spend another £10K on my system.
Dave,
It's arbitrary and not objective. For example if you had say 3000 LPs you would think that is a huge library of music. Now buy a Statement, which along with a decent source and speakers would cost around £200,000. Do the calculation and you get 66.6. Would you say you need a bigger music collection to justify the expense. No, it's codswallop.

Exactly.
It's strictly an arbitrary ratio used to justify (or demonize) spend on a proper hi-fi system. At the end of the day, you can easily tell who has overspent on their system by the quality of their music collection (and not the quantity).

I wholeheartly agree with that statement as well.

Arrogant or silly at best........................DOH !

Quite right. The quantity may be huge, but the quality may still be absent.
A small and high quality recorded music collection, is worth a King's Fee.

The reason I try to widdle my connection down every year - is to raise the aggregate quality of music. If I haven't listened to a cd in many years, my tastes have changed - and no point in having the CD home.
In any case, I have access to everything in the world on spotify - and my cd collection only goes back a decade...

So you are taking the P ?

It took a while but this arrant nonsence appears to have touched a nerve or two

Don't know - you're talking a different language.
