New Forum Feedback - Part II

Well, as RD closed the one I'd started (https://forums.naimaudio.com/displayForumTopic/content/3256006742903140), I'll copy my posts into this thread. Much better this way as it is a stickie

Now we have the breadcrumb trail of Forums.

Font size defaulting to smaller, not even making it half way across the page when you go in to a thread.

And a heads up folks, check your profile notifications, as the  Suspend All Email Notifications option has mysteriously been cleared in this update.

Quote feature seems to work but cursor is placed at the top of the window above the quoted text by default... so I guess we are to write our replies above the quoted text.

Edit: and it is using an even darker (even harder to read) shade of grey as a background !

I was about to say how cool the multiquote function is, and it is, but as you can see all the backgrounds merge together with nested quotes, so you cannot easily see what are Tony's comments, and what are my original comments.

A doubling of the auto indent will sort that. But we really need to lose the shading.

Naim control this side of things. Style, colours, font etc. It would be interesting now to get their feedback on this.

Is anyone else getting the posts on only 1/2 of the screen?
Posted on: 10 February 2011 by pcstockton
It isn't the font.  The font is fine.
It is how the borders of the "frames" are drawn.

In my opinion, that box at the top (only) right shouldn't even be there regardless of width.  It is simply hogging space.

Share those options elsewhere please, i.e. the top or bottom of the page.  And definitely not over 50% of the width of the page if it stays where it is.  If it isn;t going to scroll with the screen, it is just a huge waste of real estate.

Everything that I use works fine for me, I appreciate Naims efforts and courtesy in providing this place that I can enjoy.   My thanks.

Notice the similar comment?

I give up. You deleted my post and closed the original forum feedback thread in some vain attempt to bury the bad news and make it even harder for people to give feedback.

Good luck.

Tony

I can't see what you mean. Your post is still in the thread that I started. It's just not this thread.

Richard has linked to the original long thread, and I linked to the shortlived (but still intact) thread that I started.

Frank Abela, on page 25 of the original thread, came up with the sensible suggestion of:-
Richard, now that the dust is settling, once the updates go in tonight, how about closing this thread and opening a new one (New Forum Feedback MkII?).

Richard has put up a thread as a stickie, and cross-forum, which I cannot. IMHO that is preferable.

OK fair enough. But closing the original feedback thread just stinks of censorship and brushing the bad news under the carpet to me.

Really there should be no need for this thread at all if the developers had been doing their job properly - every single issue here should have been ironed out before the site went live.

I have better things to do with my time than provide free software usability feedback. God knows we pay enough for Naim products already.

Good luck.

I see the main text column has been fixed to a narrower width - which as long lines can be tiring and harder to read is better from my point of view.

This is the reason some are reporting 1/2 page (or screen space) and it will depend on how you view the web page and the size of your monitor. On my 19inch screen at 1680 x 1050 the attachments show how this works. Pesonally, I don't see this as an issue - and will just size the window accordingly.

Tony, sorry you feel that way.  I made a new thread in response to some requests on the first feedback thread.  I considered it and in the end agreed that it would allow better clarity by ensuring that this thread's comments pertained directly to the forum as it stands after the overnight update.  Not only have I left the old thread up as a sticky for now but there is also a link on the first post here back to the original feedback thread, so I think any accusation of censorship is totally unfounded.  Indeed, I have made every effort here to ensure there is no censorship at all, which is why your comment rather baffles me.  We want as much useful feedback as possible and to make it as easy as possible for everyone to both comment and for the hosts to read and act on it.

One issue & one request  I haven't seen mentioned before.

1) on my ipod touch the iphone app often gives multiple copies of the sticky threads at the top of a page. ie. the stickies are displayed but with a few extra ones added  which are duplicates. Attachments show the issue, at the top of the padded cell.

2) on the iphone app the originator of a thread is also named on the list of threads as well as the last poster. Can we have the same info presented via the normal  IE/Firefox/safari route please

Edit added : these issues are long standing and not associated with the recent upgrade.

regards

Richard,

The overnight upgrade seems to have changed virtually nothing and introduced a whole load of new issues to deal with. Meanwhile all the other outstanding issues are locked in a  separate thread that nobody can now comment on and I imagine most people will not have the time or inclination to repeat in this new thread, so I guess they just get forgotten about. Certainly you have now made it harder to keep a track of those.

I have done quite a lot of software QA work over the years and I must say that this is all very amateurish. I guess it may be acceptable on the website for a volunteer committee group association type thingie, but for a premium brand?

Thanks Richard.  Eventually found the settings window and brought myself back from the Pacific west coast to the UK.

Tony, fine.  I'm certainly not putting myself forward here as a software professional.  I'm just trying to help the members here, whatever their queries or problems may be.

Everything on the first feedback thread is there, intact, visible and can be commented on.  You mention virtually nothing has changed and that new problems have arisen.  So far I see quite a few changes, although I'm still waiting on a complete list so I can post it here.  Anyway, please comment here on the new issues you have found.  That way they can be dealt with in the next update. Thanks.

Will look at this as soon as we can

OK. Sorry if I come over a bit harsh. I know you are working on it.

Tony, no problem.  Anyway, it seems that most of the changes made on this update are much-needed back-end ones and bug tidying.  The big change for members is the much improved quote function.  A lot of work is being done towards a much more comprehensive search function (or should that just be "a search function"?), which is due to arrive in 3-4 weeks.

Not mine, it was ticked as usual.

Still no signature!

Are we not going to be allowed to have automatic signatures then? It really is tedious to keep having to paste mine in all the time.

Issue with IE8: almost every time I post a reply, the first attempt at clicking Submit Reply fails. I get the turning wheels window but nothing happens (and there's no 'click' from the browser). I click the X to get rid of the busy window and click Submit Reply again and this works within a second or two.

Frank.

Well, just popped in to see if anything had improved.

Yes the quote function is now working for the first time since the changeover; thank goodness for that.

BUT, why - oh! - why is the posting window still locked to the page? Still can’t refresh the page before posting, can’t tell yet whether or not we will be able to post a quote from a previous page or not, as we are still on 1st page.

As others have said, still hard/uncomfortable to read, but note Mr Stephensons comment on this. Is the promise of an increase in text size still going to be activated?

At least moving in the right direction; hope more platforms are being supported to allow the return of regular posters that have been missed here.

Regards
Peter

Well, if the Add Reply, Watch Topic, Tags, and Share This Topic relocated to be right aligned buttons on the same line as the Forums/HiFi Corner breadcrumbs, where IMHO it belongs, we could then let the forum posts go full width and each user could set a font size to suit themselves in their choice of browser.

All pretty standard stuff.

At the moment I would hate to ask somebody how the current version fares in usability for those with a disability.

Indeed, those four boxes on the right should go across the top or, more sensibly, the bottom of the thread, allowing us to use the full width of the screen.

Frank.
