It's like the NVi (or even the scaler) all over again. Good in theory but poorly implemented.

I seem to remember some posts from the old forum which asked for extra features to which the reply from Naim was that it wasn't in their philosophy to have extra features but to just keep it simple.

Hey ho.

Edit: Still no Padded Cell link at the top of the page but there is at the bottom.

so...

Is this it?
Posted on: 16 March 2011 by Jon Myles
Well, for what it's worth.
The new forum still seems to serve its function - as in provide feedback, help, communication.
Naim still does what it's good at - manufacture very good audio equipment.
Now, that's good enough for me.
I'd be happier if the staff at Naim were spending their time improving/developing products rather than worrying  about the layout of a website.
Bring on the criticism.....

I think most of us agree that the hifi products of Naim are far more important than the user forum.

But the forum is part of the Naim website/homepage, which is possibly any company's most important face-to-the-world (sorry, my expression doesn't translate well to English). The website can make a very important "first impression" of a company (and its products).

I first heard about Naim equipment last year, and the first thing I did was check out this website.
I remember looking at the forum (then the 2010 version) and thinking that it looks ok and is very active.
Ironically, this year (2011) I now visit this forum as a new Naim owner, and the forum looks awful...
I didn't buy my Naim amp based on the website/forum, but these things are important.

Jon, I fully agree with you.

This time last year, people were expressing dissatisfaction with the new Naim website. Apparently, the new format was eating away at their quality of life. But now one scarcely hears a criticism of it.

I expect exactly the same outcome with the new forum.

 Engelbert

PS We are fortunate in having such good-natured moderators. Well done guys!

Engelbert,

Thank God there's someone who agrees with me.
Let Naim put their resources into what they do best.

You guys must be really easily satisfied, if you think this forum is is better than less than satisfactory.

AFAICT  no production or R&D would need to be lost to get this fixed.
Posted on: 16 March 2011 by Jon Myles
Hi BigH No, not easily satisfied. Just the opposite, actually. I just do not expect expertise in one field to translate into another. It's a website. Live with it. Jon

hego99, you make a really valid point. And Engelbert, I think that many long time Naim devotees, consumers of both the product and this forum, will always be disappointed with the new layout of this forum, should this format remain. It's not that important in the scheme of things, but many aspects of the old forum's appearance will be sorely missed, for a long time. It's not the end of the world, but it's really.....disappointing.

And Jon, you're right, no one expects that expertise in one field will translate into another. That's why Naim hired another company with expertise in forums.

errr  ???  That's why Naim hired another company with expertise in forums.

Who are they then   ???
I don't see a lot of expertise around these parts recently.

I  can't help feeling  a 12 year old with a Forum Design for Dummies book would have more so called "expertise".

I think The Hawk refers to "Hoop.la", the company providing forum technology as a service/product, and I think Naim pays extra for some "premium version" of the forum service.

Ok guys thanks for all the feed back to date, several of the points here have already been addressed in the last update and we will work our way through the rest of your ideas and consider them. The most important issues to do with functionality will be looked at first. I think many of the new posts are going round and round so now is a good time to call a halt on this topic for a while. We will start another forum topic after further tweaks. Thank you all for your patience and support during this transition.

<script type="text/javascript"></script>

We just rolled out another software update for all Hoop.la sites!  This was a relatively minor update, fixing a few bugs, but also adding the following new features:

1.  Support For Edit Grace Period

By default, Hoop.la allows users to edit or delete their own posts anytime.  The one exception is a forum topic that already has replies... we don't allow users to delete those (only admins can).

However, some sites would rather restrict the ability of their members to edit anytime.  Thus, we've added a new Edit Grace Period option in the control panel.  When this is enabled, your members will only be able to edit or delete their own posts within a certain grace period (a certain number of minutes that you set).

To enable this option, go to Manage > Admin Control Panel > Settings > Member Settings.  The new option is in the Basic Settings section on that page.

2.  Categories and Forums List Page Enhancement

If you have more than one forum, we display a list of categories and forums for users to select from. Previously, we only displayed the name of the forum, as well as an indicator about whether there are unread posts in the forums.

In this update, we've started displaying a bit more info for each forum: total topics in the forum, as well as link to the last updated topic in the forum.  See example below.

3.  Support for Premium Custom Pages

A couple of weeks ago we rolled out support for Premium Memberships.  One oversight, though, was that you could not make a Custom Page premium.  We've fixed that in this update.. now you cam designate any Custom Page that you create in Hoop.la as "premium", allowing access only to premium members of your site.

4.  Join Date Now Displayed

Hoop.la now displays the date that a member joined your site in two places: on the Members list (/members) page, as well as the "User Div", the popup window that is triggered when you click on a member's "gingerbread man" icon.

Hope you enjoy the new features.  As always, please bring your feedback, suggestions, and questions to us on our support site at http://help.socialstrata.com.

The next big thing we are working on: we'll be adding support for custom widgets (add any code you want as a widget), as well as the ability to add widgets on any page, not just the "home" page.
