Ouch!  But pretty accurate.  Given the wailing and gnashing of teeth it would seem that Armageddon (pardon the poor deliberate pun) has arrived.

Lots of other things to do than get upset over this.

Cheers

Dear Jeff,

For "me," it is not "my" posts that matter, but those of "others." I would not have been even slightly offended if everything I ever posted, except for the threads in the Music Room had been deleted.

What I think is amazing is that there is even the remotest consideration [however unlikely this must ultimately be] of returning to the old "EVE" arrangement, which is why I selected the quotation that I made. It suggests to me that Naim is not so well pleased with the new arrangement.

Like most here, I would imagine, I want the Forum to come back to robust health.

By now, I know that my posts here will be much rarer in future, as the current arrangement is hardly inviting for me, and, apparently, for some others. Does this matter? No of course not. It is not my Forum, but it is one I was glad to be able to enjoy contributing to on many topics. The only subject area where I might venture that my efforts have or had some lasting value is in the Music Room. Otherwise my posts [in the Cell and Hifi Corner] are certainly not more than ephemeral. Not better than most, and not worse either.

I am not at all sure what is "ridiculous" about my observation, so if you would be so kind as to explain it, I'll certainly read you answer respectfully.

ATB from George

PS: There is no vehemence left in me regarding the changes by now. And vehemence was real enough, because I actually cared enough to be vexed. By now I have to say that this initial vexation has been replaced with a sanguine attitude to what happens, except for wishing that things improve so others may enjoy the forum better in the future. Initially I found the change seeming more like change for changes sake, and the iPhone application incident really did annoy me, but that issue was quite quickly fixed after it was pointed out. But as you and Jim note, there are indeed many other things to occupy us, and provide mild and harmless diversions in life! It is possible to form new routines and break old ones ...

Just to echo what Jeff said. The message of how unhappy a number of us are has clearly got through to Naim, so let's quit the whining and threatening to leave and leave this thread to feedback of how the thing behaves.

On the subject of which...I was going to post this from my iPad, but Post Reply wasn't responding  no matter how many times I tapped it, so I got up off my fundament and wandered over to the PC. :-)

George et al,

I will try very hard to make this my last post on this thread.

I can't see at the moment how many posts are on thread II, but I think there was over 900 posts on thread I and I feel fairly confident "search engine" was mentioned at least 10 times OR MORE.  If you take the time to read any of Paul's posts at SocialStrata he deems it a MAJOR priority and references the "heat" (from here) he is taking in getting it as soon as possible.  What else can he do ?  Does he really need  to hear again of its importance.  Should he spend time dealing with the smilies at SocialStrata to try and keep moving forward, or drop that to update all of us here about where our little pet peeves stand in priority.

There are still people complaining about their clock being wrong.  That was fixable the first day but no one wanted to try anything, they wanted to post criticisms and still do.

Some actual "users" have found techniques or learned tricks and shared them - THAT is helpful.  But if we can't be bothered to try or read or "go to the OTHER computer", then maybe our experience here is more about what we have created and do and far far less about what Paul and Naim should be doing for us.

Sorry my posts on this thread have been so agitated.  I am CDO (in alphabetical order they way it should be) and anal retentive and, as someone else flippantly remarked, welcome to the internet. And regarding my insinuation on historical post hierarchy and importance, the reply validates what I said if read closely.

I have truly learned a great deal from historical posts and their originators and contributors.  But, I suspect, maybe like Paul at the moment, I don't need to be reminded of it endlessly.

I will be in the music room listening to my meaningless crap.  Sorry to have taken up the time and bandwidth over here.

regards
Jeff A

Thanks Ted, timzones and email can sometimes confuse comms.
Can you give me a eta on the search release, I am and will be at a critical point with my hoopla forum with the search release in Feb.Without support with information to ease the heat on my hoopla forum regarding the lack of a search engine which we must agree with our forum users is a serious issue then I may need to talk to you and Sandy about going back to EVE.

Hi Paul-

You did hear me say that search improvements are NOT in the Feb release, right?  Just want to be sure because you just implied otherwise in your last reply.

We are definitely trying to keep everyone up-to-date with latest info.  As for going back to Eve... that's probably not something you want to seriously consider because it would be costly--we have no way to migrate the opposite way at the moment, so although we can do it for you if you really want, it would be a lot of work on our end and would not be cheap.

I understand that change is always difficult, but also remember that you will always hear more from the people who dislike changes than those that do.  Rest assured that the search will be better in a future release. I just can't give you a date because we do not have one yet.  I don't like over-promising.

I think your members will like the new/improved Reply with Quote in the Feb release.

Take care,

Ted

Looks like one for the lawyers.
The only thing that is any good about that Social Strata page is that the posts are in an easily readable font. I for one would be happier if that same font could be adopted on this forum.

Within 5 minutes of posting in this thread I tried to post, from the same PC, a reply in the Music Room, but I was presented with spinning cogs as I pressed Submit Reply and the page locked. I've closed and re-opened the browser to post this.

I'm using IE8 8.0.6001.19019. Java is up to date, as is Flash and everything else I can think of that might be relevant. WIndows Vista Home Premium, Version 6.0  Build 6002 Service Pack 2

Here's a proper company supplying forum software.

Zaphod formally Dean.
Having looked at this Social Strata thread you have to indeed add arrogance to incompetence - how do these guys stay in business?

I'm on quite a few forums that use vbulletin and never encountered even one of the issues we see here. It's not rocket science when you deal with a real professional company.
Posted on: 13 February 2011 by Jan-Erik Nordoen
Hmmm, vbulletin : smart, professional, platform independent... I think we should start a paypal fund and all pitch in to help Naim migrate over there. I'm good for $ 50

(let's see now, assuming 30 % of 15,236 members chip in $50 each... we're close to $230,000)

Will that do it Paul ?
Posted on: 13 February 2011 by MilesSmiles
You can count me in.
Posted on: 13 February 2011 by JonR
vBulletin or the software that Linn use, myBB, would do it for me.

I see.  I thought the app only made public our basic profile.  I didnt even know you could put your phone/address/email in a profile.  At least I never saw the option to.  I thought I had jammed my email address at the end of my Bio at one point.

I think i need to rediscover the various profile settings.  Although I do think the settings are not the same for all people.  For over a year I couldn't edit my "Location" when others clearly could.

By the way, it is my true birthday if you feel like sending me a card or something......  and yes a mammary is a mammalian protuberance and one of my favorites.

Nice Wittegenstein blast.  You made me pull of the Blue and Brown Books for a refresher.

Not ONLY do these clowns present a forum that does not even do the most basic functions that the replaced forum had, they have NO fall back plan.

"It will be very expensive for you"  WTF they produce a piece of "work?" that is not of merchantable quality and then expect the customer to pay to get it back to it's previous state.

These guys seem mind numbingly dumb, the business acumen of an amoeba.

I've been testing in IE8 and have not been able to reproduce this issue at all.  Do you have a specific post where the issue is prominent so I can try to reproduce it there (in case it's an issue specific to your site or the specific post)?

Hi Paul,

I can't tell I'm afraid. I just tried using Firefox (3.0.15) and the entire lower section below the 'Toggle WYSIWIG' link was missing so I couldn't submit a reply. Sorry, I did try...! But it seems I'm not the only one with the issue. I've seen Peter_RN and one other report the problem.

It happens to me on 4 out of 5 postings.

As for signatures, if the rule remains that the only time the signature is displayed is as initiator of a thread, I'll have to continue pasting it in all the time which is tedious.

Regards,
Frank.

Paul,

FYI, that problem I had with the missing Submit button was reported to Hoop.La on Saturday in the "No Tool Bar" thread. I don't have an account on that support portal (weird - why is it different to my account here?) so didn't chime in on that. Happy for you to mention it if you like.

Frank.

And another thing, where has the "Ignore" option gone?

Three people had managed to make my ignore list, and life was good.

Now I get to see their useless drivel again, and life is not so idyllic.

What are "new clips" and why am I being emailed about them?
Posted on: 14 February 2011 by Ismaningerman
Er . . . how does one delete one's profile completely? Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't see any possibility to do this.
Posted on: 14 February 2011 by Frank Abela
You must have a profile to be able to login to the forum and contribute, which is the purpose of the forum...

Yes, Frank, but I want to leave the forum and leave no digital traces . . .

Just ask Richard. All trace of quite a few members has dissapeared - posts, profiles, previous aliases etc etc. I'm pretty sure you can be deleted completely - unless....Hoop.la have screwed that functionality as well....

In my eternal quest to be useful I often used "search"  to provide answers to questions previously asked. Less from vanity than economy I would usually limit the keyword search to my own posts.

This can be useful when you have a vague feeling that someone said something wise, stupid or interesting in the past. It follows that members stick and be stuck with one forum name.

The Search facility being promised may or may not have this - http://help.socialstrata.com/d...t/192547783842909833 .

It would be highly useful if it did.

From my own perspective - a number of answers I made contained links to previous replies. These links (as in FAQ) all end in the same Dead Zone.

It would be nice (if a tremendous fag) for someone who has the admin power to go through these and insert working links. It wouldn't be much fun without a pretty ritzy search engine. Possibly one along the lines of the example in the link above.
Posted on: 14 February 2011 by Richard Dane
I think this task falls to me, but as you rightly point out, without a working search facility, it's nigh on impossible.  So, until then...
Posted on: 14 February 2011 by Richard Dane
Ismaningerman, all you have to do is ask...  either by e-mail or by post alert.
Posted on: 14 February 2011 by Richard Dane
Patrick, just to clarify, the App hole didn't make info "public" in the widest sense.  It was only ever available to a member of the forum who happened to be logged in using the App and happened to click on your profile.  Non-members could not see any info.  Either way, a huge cock-up and action was taken to take the forum off-line as soon as it was made known and confirmed to admin.
