Additionally on Search.

'Refine List' used from Naim Users looks at the full Customer Forum. The result it gives is a list of threads - rather than relevant posts. As such it does not produce direct access to what is sought.
For example - https://forums.naimaudio.com/di...36674?query=leveling 2nd result  "Record Deck Out Of The Loft" - open thread and ? use search in your browser to find the word "leveling".

2 answers to Support Enquiries:
"We do plan on adding a separate search feature in the future that will do exactly as you are requesting: allow searching of all posts, including replies, and listing each individual reply separately in the search results."

and

"To summarize:

1.  Hoop.la does indeed already have built-in search, via the "Refine List" box at the top of each content page.  You type in your search term and it filters the content list you are looking for to give you matches.

2.  The limiting part of the current search in Hoop.la, however, is that it is a search that is limited to the scope of the page you are on.  If you are looking at ALL TOPICS, it will search across all topics and give you matches. If you are on a particular forum page, then it will only search within that forum.

That is part of what is being enhanced in the search upgrade-- the ability to search site-wide anywhere (which is really the biggest issue).  The second enhancement with the search is that the search results we provide more info and look more like Google's search results page."

I think the biggest issue here is - what search criteria you can enter and what exactly is "more info". Not a definition but detail.

Can you give me a eta on the search release, I am and will be at a critical point with my hoopla forum with the search release in Feb.Without support with information to ease the heat on my hoopla forum regarding the lack of a search engine which we must agree with our forum users is a serious issue then I may need to talk to you and Sandy about going back to EVE.

Hi Paul-

You did hear me say that search improvements are NOT in the Feb release, right?  Just want to be sure because you just implied otherwise in your last reply.

We are definitely trying to keep everyone up-to-date with latest info.  As for going back to Eve... that's probably not something you want to seriously consider because it would be costly--we have no way to migrate the opposite way at the moment, so although we can do it for you if you really want, it would be a lot of work on our end and would not be cheap.

I understand that change is always difficult, but also remember that you will always hear more from the people who dislike changes than those that do.  Rest assured that the search will be better in a future release. I just can't give you a date because we do not have one yet.  I don't like over-promising.

I think your members will like the new/improved Reply with Quote in the Feb release.

Take care,

Ted

Having read the exchange of mails between Paul and Ted on the socialstrata link above, I think Ted has lost sight of "who is the customer" judging by the tone of his replies.  He would do well to remember that anyone on this site thinking of starting a forum of there own (which I have considered) will not be using socialstrata...

I do think Naim should have better understood what they were getting from day one but time to rally round and support them me thinks.

Exactly. That was why I posted the extract.

Good news: the search function has improved substantially. Type in "Vereker" and you'll see.

I realize that Google has cornered the market on "Search" and that Facebook and associated ventures, such as Social Strata / Hoof.la would like to take it away from them, but can we please dump the ridiculous term "Refine list" and get back "Search" . If that is too google-like for Hoof.la, may I suggest "Find"

Is there any glimmer of hope, that sometime in the future, pictures posted to the forum
might be displayed full size, as on the old forum?

The system pics thread is ruined by this new forum.

I know it is only pics posted to the forum that are displayed like postage stamps, but they make up a sizable percentage of the total.

Sorry to moan, but I used to enjoy visiting this thread.  Pictures are now too small and cannot be scaled up. (Note I am not referring to the icons but to the image shown after the icon is clicked on.)

If Naim made a similar change in usability to one of its own products, like the change to the forum, it would lose sales.

Thanks

I haven't posted on here for a long time but have to say this new Forum design gives me a headache: probably something to do with the overly dark grey blocks which only cover half the screen.

I always thought the (previous) Naim Forum was one of the best laid out and designed Forums - even the change to green. This is just tiring to read through.

"I can't tell I'm afraid. I just tried using Firefox (3.0.15) and the entire lower section below the 'Toggle WYSIWIG' link was missing so I couldn't submit a reply. Sorry, I did try...! But it seems I'm not the only one with the issue. I've seen Peter_RN and one other report the problem."

Frank why are you using such an old version of Firefox. That must be pushing three years old and is considerably less functional and secure than the latest version, 3.6.13. Version 4 is at and advanced stage of beta testing and should be generally available soon.
You should upgrade to something newer.

Kamera, I put picture size as one of the items on my "issue list".  I also noted that proportions looked odd in IE but fine in Firefox.  Again, it's on the list...

I will probably be alone in this but perhaps the best thing we could all do right inow is LET PAUL TAKE CARE OF IT.  Whenever and however long that takes.  If it doesn't meet your timetable, may I courteously but with no respect suggest you leave as you have promised ad nauseum.

Perhaps some poor decisions have been made, are our social lives so pathetic that when we feel like we have some one down, ie Paul and Naim at the moment,we pile it on even heavier ?

If you can limp around the forum, use it to whatever level capable or interested. Otherwise, go ride your bike.

Jeff, IMO, way too rude. Everyone's got a right to express how they feel here. You have a right to express your frustration with George. George has expressed his frustration with the site and felt like leaving. I'm bothered by your rudeness to George, and I just want to express that, as is my right. He's a real decent person, unbelievable knowledge of music, and has been an asset to this forum with his contributions.

I've just done a search on my user-name and found a thread slagging me off! ****ing search function - I wish it didn't bloody work now!!

EDITED TO ADD: On a (slightly more serious) note, I hope PS sees the irony of being on the wrong end of a bunch of so-called "answers" from this Ted O'Neil bloke which are basically sales pitches, and patronising ones at that. Mr O'Neil has not exactly distinguished himself by his responses, IMO, and it's somewhat unfortunate to find that the future of the Naim forum is now in his hands.

I'm obviously going to have to untick the "post in invisible ink" option.
The search function has been working far better since the upgrade, as I posted three nights ago.
I guess I forget we're not a bunch of techies who try everything again and again just in case something's been changed but not announced.

I wish this was true. How on earth does this 'search' function actually work? With the old(er) forum, I could type in Nait XS in the search function, and I would get pages of related threads. Now, it just defaults to the past day's worth, on topics that have nothing to do with what I typed in. I won't knock how the forum looks or anything of the like; but I sure expect a simple search function to work properly...

Any idea when this will get cleared? I'm getting frustrated Googling subjects that relate to Naim posts, only to click on them and show me that it can't find the original post, either by subject header or Cache...

This is not a complaint, merely asking for advice. The only way I can use the quote function, in either IE 8 or Firefox, is to toggle out the toolbar. Is this correct or am I being stupid?

I find the Naim forum App a real pleasure with my iPad, but for one problem: when a message quotes another message, there is nothing to distinguish the quoted message from the quoting message.

With the Firefox version and my MacBookPro the quoted message has a different background (grey), but not with the iPad App.

As I said a couple of weeks back, 'refine list' only finds threads where the search term is in the opening post. Also, it was only finding Hoop.la threads - if you click on 'All Topics', the thread count shows almost 50,000.

Having checked yesterday, some earlier threads are now viewable, so Hoop.la must have started re-activating old links. A google search still throws up plenty of dead links, but hopefully they'll all be working by the time the new search engine arrives.

To insert your quote above I simply clicked on the quote icon applicable to your post, et voila!

What you cannot do is use the quote function (it would seem) if you want to cite multiple quotes, or go back a page(s) to cite a previous quote(s) as this prompts a navigation warning. I have not actually tried ituntil now to the extent of sending it, but it would appear that you can copy and paste in quotes.
Thus......

which Richard posted previously, thus giving an option to insert multiple quotes as long as the quotes appear on the thread page number on which your reply occurs. Or if you find the text you wish to quote on a previous page, then copy it and insert it into your own post.

Cack-handed I know but it works for me using Firefox with Java and latest Flash plug-ins installed.

Mind you, given "Ted's" reply to Paul Stephenson regarding site functionalty etc, I can't see Hoop.la darkening Naim's doorstep in the future to inflict more half-baked nonsense on forum users.

Al, For multiple quotes, use the '+' button next to quote, then 'post reply' and your selected quotes appear.

Opening another window lets you quote from another page if you quote, then copy and paste it, as I've just discovered. From Richard's opening post...

Does NAIM actually have these "old" threads archived in any way?
It would be a shame if, especially the technical threads were lost, if someone were to "cock up" putting it politely. Seems like a  possibility now.

Hi folks

Earlier in the thread I posted that I had asked Hoop.la to explain how the ‘Multi Quote’ function should be used.

They have now replied requesting suggestions on how WE would like it to work.

Below I will post my question followed by their answer. Suggest that it is up to us to respond if we hope to get the solution we all desire.

Question.

Hello

Could you please explain just how the new ‘multi quote’ function can be used when you wish to quote from a previous page, as well as the current page?

This is often the case especially when a new page has only one or two post on it.

I know that you can post a quote from a previous page; we need to be able to quote from more than one page.

Having the posting page tied to the current page (crazy) prevents me from being able to do this as the first quote selected cannot survive the page change and therefore the selection of the second quote.

Also, where is the ‘Word’ button referred to in the posting tips for formatting a Word document? This is the only way of making this forum remotely bearable to post in, yet once pasted it has to be manually reformatted before posting.

I look forward to your reply, which I will be very happy to disclose to my fellow members on the Naim forum.

Many thanks in anticipation,
Peter

Hoolp.la reply.

Hi Peter, sorry it took so long to reply!  We are discussing the multi-quote spanning pages internally, and will look for a solution.  How do you see it working...in other words, do you want the posting popup to persist across pages as you select quotes?  This is your chance to have some input on how to attack this issue.  Regarding pasting from Word, I'm going to have to do some troubleshooting on that one. It might be a vestige of previous code...I'll find out more and reply for you.

Second reply

Hi Peter,

The "Paste from Word" feature was removed in a recent release.  It looks like we just failed to update the Posting Tips popup window to remove that wording.  We'll get it removed to avoid any confusion.

If you are having specific issues posting or pasting text from Word, it would be helpful if you could log those issues (with as much detail as possible) on our support forums at: http://help.socialstrata.com  That will enable us to properly track the issue and address any problems you're having.

Regards,

Brian
