Springsteen - High Hopes?

Posted by: joerand on 15 January 2014

Is the title of Bruce's latest offering just a premonition for his sales?

I heard the first 4-5 tracks unexpectedly while I was in a record shop today and it was instantly recognizable as late 70's early 80's Bruce. Record shops tend to play music with a big and loud sound, and "High Hopes" sounded pretty damned good to me there. Plenty of drive and energy, like his gritty, genuine, non-commercial stuff. Classic guitar riffs.

Just wondering what others think, if you've heard it.

Bought it yesterday on 180g 2 disc set pressing is quite until the music starts on all four sides on my copy. I'm impressed  on first play buy with confidence.

I had a chance to listen to the entire album on my PC. I really like it. I'm going to buy the vinyl.

I have Bruce's early LPs through "Tunnel of Love". He just got too commercial at that point (not withstanding "Nebraska"). Since then the only ones I've bought have been "The Rising" and "18 Tracks".

To his credit, "High Hopes" seems to have recaptured a good bit of his youthful sound and energy. The fact that I like it on first listen means it should get better with repeated spins.

The only downside is that it has that modern, boomy bottom-end. On the upside, I think my son will like to listen to it with me .

My vinyl (with full cd enclosed) arrived yesterday. I have only had time to listen to the cd and i am enjoying it. It has been on several times. The production seems much more open after the last two albums and there is a lot of energy in the music. After several reviews about it being a collection of old songs I was a little cautious. Don't be. If you like Springsteen then this is a good one I think.

ps: if Sony can put a cd in with the vinyl and the vinyl is very reasonably priced why the devil can't everyone else! Worst case in my experience being Provogue who don't even have a download card!

I was pleasantly surprised after some of the indifferent previews it got. I really like it.

However for me the real gem is the DVD, a fabulous live performance of Born in the USA. It's quite breathtaking and far superior to the original album. IMHO of course.

Just bought the vinyl locally for $24. As you say, lutyens, a good value esp with the CD tucked in there.  Interesting it's not a gatefold, but the heavy, anti-static inner jackets are a nice touch. Flat, quiet 180 g vinyl.

The SQ is very nice. Big full sound, albeit with a compressed lower bass. Music really is fantastic, exciting. It was also interesting to see in the credits that The Big Man had a chance to play on this LP before his death.

The song "Just Like Fire Would" reminds me of Mellencamp's "Small Town".

I'm not normally too much into Springsteen stuff, but just listened to this this morning and it's a great varied bunch of tracks. The Tom Joad track is awesome.

Maybe it's something to do with Tom Morello's influence.

Anyway, I'll be buying it later.

Just not too sure whether to buy the High Res or the CD version.

Anyone bought the High Res version and can vouch for it?

Can't comment on the hi-rez version, but the vinyl sounds surprisingly good. Very enjoyable.

Good to see Springsteen discussed here for a change!  Even if I don't agree with everything being said - Nebraska was prior to Tunnel of Love; Tunnel of Love features some of his best songs and is hardly commercial, and neither are all of his post TOL recordings - for eg. The Ghost of Tom Joad (if you like Nebraska you really should check it out), Devils & Dust etc.  Anyway, moving on...

As per Bruce's sleeve notes the album is primarily a collection of previously unreleased material; reworkings (41 Shots & Tom Joad); and covers (High Hopes [also a reworking as he has previously recorded this], Just Like Fire Would, Dream Baby Dream).

The album reminds me a lot of seeing him in Australia last year (for eg. both High Hopes and the reworked Tom Joad were performed at the show I went to), which is no surprise as it was this tour and Tom Morello standing in for Lil' Steve that provided the impetus for the album.

The reason Clarence appears on some of the tracks is that they were originally recorded during 'The Rising' sessions ("Down In The Hole" and "Heaven's Wall" for eg. are lyrically and musically very similar to tracks that made it on to 'The Rising').  You'll notice these tracks (and others) were either produced or co-produced by Brendan O'Brien and it shows.  Fortunately Ron Aniello produced the more recent recordings which for me is one of the big plus points of this album.  This is probably why lutyens finds the production "more open", which I definitely agree with.

Overall some great songs and the perfect memento to last years tour.  I'm stoked that 'High Hopes' made it on as this was a real show highlight.  I'm a bit ambivalent about '41 Shots' and 'Tom Joad' as, while they are great songs, for me at least the arrangements are better suited to the live environment, but I guess its still good to have them.   Other stand out tracks for me are 'Frankie Fell in Love' and 'The Wall'

Next up two shows in Auckland later this year and the news that he will now be selling recordings of his live shows via a USB stick that you can preorder from his online store and then download a show.  I have a feeling this could be a very expensive year...

I'm really enjoying High Hopes, and particularly the dynamic that Tom Morello brings to the dance.

Only just got around to playing the US vinyl pressing. It's perfectly quiet and flat......it can be done.

The low bass is very deep and spatial throughout, but there does seem to be a compressed mid-range. It has a digital tone to the recording, but sounds great nonetheless.

Great album with no weak tracks.

Has anyone downloaded the 24/48 version as yet I can't get a copy due to UK IP, both HD Tracks and Qobuz are now locking UK downloaders out.
