UnitiServe SSD goes offline constantly ....

Posted by: MichaelSch on 15 January 2014

Hi out there,

A problem appeared with my US SSD ...

We went on Xmas holidays and I shut down all my network, disk station, router, switches and also my US and SuperUniti ...

To prevent losing all my precious music I took out one of the two disks from the disk station and hid it away. It is a two disk system in hybrid Raid (Synology DS412+).

Returning after 2 weeks I plugged in the disk again and powered everything up. Since then my US SSD goes offline and becomes unavailable for the Naim units. I cannot wake it without turning off and on the power switch on the back.

First, I thought it was due to disk hibernation, but that is turned off now. I have rebooted the network router, disk station, etc. a number of times. And yesterday it went well most of the day, but today it was offline again. Usually it goes offline after a few songs (the logo starts blinking and soon after it give the "click" and is down).

None of my other equipment connected to the Disk Station has any problems. I can't see anything in the logs of the disk station and neither in the logs of the US SSD.

I have rescanned the music store and shares, I have rebuilt the Music database.

I am simply running out of ideas, except I do think it is some kind of network problem - or the US SSD being very sensitive/picky about something on the network.

Can anyone bring some ideas forward??

It drives me crazy!

I have written to Naim Support, but they don't answer.

Thanks,

Michael

I am getting messages in the US SSD system log:

Severity "Engineer"

Category "Notifying"

"Error: ArgumentException - An item with the same key has already been added. occurred while scanning share \\DISKSTATION\NaimDownloads (166)"

There are a couple of these messages - even after I have rebuilt the music DB.

Severity "User"

Category "Music Management"

"Information: No DigiFi track found for "I Do Believe in Love" in "Katie Melua - Piece by Piece" on music store "\\DiskStation\NaimAudio" "

There are a number of these messages - also after rebuilding the music DB.

Michael,

Just for reference my US SSD has been playing up recently also but nothing that looses the music store. I am getting online/offline issues all day (so loose playback, search, refresh functions) but for the briefest of time.

I have trouble with WAV files being out of sequence in album folders, WAV files not being recognised in album folders, general small niggly things.

Everything always seems to come back mind after a re-boot, which isn't happening in your example it seems. Is it looking for something that isn't there hence throwing the database out thus sending the US into a spin?

Dan,

I am not aware that it should be looking for something that isn't there. However, the messages I posted above indicated that something was wrong in the index or DB. So, I just rebuilt the DB once again and it hasn't gone done since (4 hours ago - so that's an improvement). No new messages since then.

I had an idea about something could have gone wrong in Raid sync. in removing a disk and plug it back in (Disk station off power all the way). But then other devices should have problems as well.

I really don't know. I could try to remove the music store ref. and re-register it, but don't want to play hazard with that sort of thing with 500 CDs ...

I am interested to under stand why you removed a drive to protect your music.

a raid set up without a drive is at serious risk. If the unit was powered down, surely the best place for it was in the nas?

I am not suggesting this was the issue just trying to understand the reasoning.

We left home for over 2 weeks. Should someone break into the house and runaway with IT equipment such as the disk station I would lose everything, so I removed one disk and hid a separate place. I left one disk in the disk station, which I also stowed away. Should there be a theft, the chances they find both was next to zero. When returning back home I plugged in the disk again, put the disk station back in its place and powered up. So, it was never powered up while the disk was detached.

Other than this, the rebuilt database may be at fault, but I am not sure why that would cause the unit to shut down. That doesn't seem right to me. Hopefully your second rebuild has sorted it though.

No storms - it doesn't blow a wind here between the mountains of Switzerland. If it does, it lasts for halv an hour and it's gone.

I do have hopes for the 2nd DB rebuilt as the SSD has now been running since yesterday afternoon. That is a record since the trouble started. I made thorough disk-tests and it showed nothing. So, yesterday I rebuilt the DB a 2nd time. No new system messages since then and no shutting down since then.

It appears that a faulty DB may have caused the US SSD to shut down - still cautious with the conclusion ...

It also appears that 1 rebuild was not enough - it took 2 rebuilds to overcome trouble.

It also appears that removing a disk from the Synology hybrid raid and plugging it back in while being off power have caused something to happen.

Will let everyone know if there is more to the story as it could perhaps help others.

Guys,

Sorry to experience, that the problem is not solved. However, now I don't see any system messages. It just went offline twice the last half hour after working properly for about 18 hrs.

So, I am back in investigation mode ...

What can cause the SSD to go offline and close down?

Problem Found - Problem Solved !!

Just to update all of you ....

After weeks of frustration I finally found the problem. Since I am an electrical engineer I couldn't resist opening it and take a look inside. When I did that the logo piece and the print board fell apart and I discovered that the tiny folio connecting the two pieces was almost broken - hanging in just a tiny edge of folio. When I touched it - the last tiny string broke and they separated.

So I got my Naim dealer to order and send me a new part, as I suspected this could be the reason why it kept shutting down.

Now after replacing the logo part the SSD has been running without problems for 2 days, which was impossible before. So I am fairly sure we found the cause of the shutting down problem.

Thanks to Phil from Naim and Peter from AudioVector.

(I would upload a photo if just I could get it to work with this editor .... but can't)

It has now been running for 4 days without problems, so I consider the problem as solved.
