Does anyone here still listen to 7" 45rpm singles?
Posted by: Kevin-W on 15 January 2014
I've been looking at mine today - hundreds (if not thousands) of the things, and realised that I just don't play 'em enough. They are quite beautiful as objects, and a lot of the ones I have never appeared, as far as I know, on CD or LP.
Thinking about having a weekend where I only play 7" 45s...
Anyone here still play their 45s?
Sounds like it's time for a pajama party! Be sure to put your name on all your 45s so we can tell them apart .
I have a couple dozen 45s that are mostly rare Beatles singles and EPs. I haven't played them since I was a teen, although I did take a mono 45 of "I am the Walrus" with me to demo TTs.
They just seem a bit too labor intensive, esp since the CDs came along.
whoa! saucy! I have not listened to any 45's since I swapped my Lingo for a 'geddon, a few years back, now. Luckily I didn't collect many so I have a very small pile taking up space. Do you remember the Flexi discs that were free with NME and SOUNDS?
I do, I have a few.
There used to be a bizarre mag in the early 1980s called "Flexi-Pop", which came with a transparent blue flexi every issue. I have a few of those somewhere as well.
Hi Kevin
I do enjoy playing this one from time-to-time, if only to exercise the woofers
And it is....
Okay, it's a 12" single, but I hope it still qualifies!
Best regards, FT

FAC 73! It's a goodie. But as you say, it's a 12" - there never was a 7" of Blue Monday... so I'll let you off.
Just bought this Purson 7" for the non album B side.
My wife has about 400 singles that get played a lot.

Wow! That's cool. Not to be glib, but do you have a jukebox, or at least an auto TT with one of those stacker posts? Or does she just play them a side at a time?

She wishes she still had a stack it high and let them drop auto turntable, but they get played on my turntable.
Only trouble now is since I got the Okki she wants me to clean all her singles
Yeah, I remember you talking about the 7" RCM arm a while ago.
A lot of work just to play them. I can't imagine trying to clean that many 45s.
My teenage son went to a friend's house recently and they had a jukebox in the rec-room that played 45s. He had a great time using it.
I still have about 400 singles as well. My Keith Monks comes with a special mat and brush for 7" singles that makes cleaning them very simple. I have to say that, apart from a 'nostalgic' session very once and a while, they are rarely played.
A friend dropped off a box full of 45s recently. All top hits from the 60s.
It's interesting that we are going back to a *tune* culture rather than *album* culture albeit this time there is no physical media to avoid landfill media graveyard like this.
What a great friend you have there, Kuma. Your photo has me envious .
Her mom kept all those records for her but she wanted to dump them all.
She knows I use a record player so gave them to me. So sad she was just stuff them in the garbage bag to the landfill literally. I told her to get a RP6.
These are probably the same ones you have. Looks like they made ton of them in the US. I was surprised that they did not come with pretty outer sleeves or plastic outer. Many are just plain paper sleeves.
Right, 45s often came in generic sleeves per record company (with a hole in the center to read the label). Those I bought were never wrapped in anything but a loose paper outer sleeve; no cellophane. It made for dusty, dirty vinyl straight out of the shop. Most of my Beatles singles came with photo sleeves, but they are all ring-worn to some degree due to lack of any exterior wrapping. The US singles all came with big 45 holes. My Beatles Parlaphone singles and EPs came with the small-post holes that could be knocked-out to fit the big post.
I still have a pile of 45s but I almost never play them now - maybe just one track occasionally and usually very LOUD.
I do look at the classifieds for jukeboxes as I think that's the only way I'll ever regularly play singles - trouble is the nice ones are all very expensive due to "collectability".
I remember two kinds of jukeboxes while growing up; the little ones at the soda counter that were intended to play quietly, personally for a dime ...
and the big consoles at the beer halls that were intended to rock the entire joint for a quarter

Indeed Kuma. That's a handsome haul you have there. Please make sure they don't go to landfill...
I feel a 45rpm morning coming on tomorrow when my wife goes out for a birthday lunch with our daughter.

Fresh from the garage and, until Kevin's post, had competely forgotten about them. Juicy Lucy, JD, NO, LZ, JT, PF, Stones, Beatles, Tubes and other obscure stuff.
Will sort them out tomorrow and that should be fun!
