Claudio Abbado ~ 26 June 1933 – died in Bologna on 20 January 2014

He was one of the finest

All my Abbado CDs and LPs have climbed down from the shelves and walked across the room to hold vigil by the audio rack...

Mr. Abbado was known for the directness and musicality of his performances. He almost always conducted from memory, insisting that using the score meant that he did not know the work adequately.

He was a particularly lyrical interpreter of Mahler, whose richly emotional language he had absorbed as a student in Vienna. But he was also a distinguished conductor of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, and he had a flair for Russian symphonic music.

RIP

Just watched a tribute to Maestro Abbado on tv:it was performed in 2000 at Teatro di Ferrara.Opera was "Così fan tutte" by W.A.Mozart,Ferrara's chore.Abbado was brilliant even if I would like to watch  some of his works in "periodo scaligero".Still waiting for RAI to ristore them.

Excellent post Fabio 1. Claudio Abbado was one of my personal all time favorites . Especially in Mahler and Beethoven. I also love his first DG recording of the Ravel piano concerto with Martha Argerich . RIP Maestro

I just heard that Milan's Mayor proposed to Teatro alla Scala(which immediately agreed)a tribute concert for Abbado on Monday at six pm.Barenboim will perform Marcia funebre from Eroica by Beethoven.Nobody will stay into the Theathre as audience except the Orchestra.Music will be broadcast in the whole Scala's Square so that everybody will be able to listen to.Me too for sure.

Wonderful communicator, will be sorely missed. His early DG recordings form an important part of my collection and hence listening experience.

RIP Maestro.

Had the privilege of watching once Abaddo conduct the Chicago Symphony in the nineteen eighties. It was an all Brahms evening.

Sad to hear the news of this great conductor passing away.

It was through Claudio Abbado I became familiar with Giovanni Pergolesi's Stabat Mater.
Listen to his classic 1985 recording with the London Symphony Orchestra and the marvelous Margaret Marsall. Compare this with his very different 2009 recording with the Orchestra Mozart. (both available from Deutsche Grammophone). These performances demonstrate his development and diversity as conductor.

Quis est homo qui non fleret?

Rest in Peace dear Claudio.....
