Do Naim servers support the "Disc x of y" tag?

Posted by: Bart on 22 January 2014

I have a lot of multi-disc sets (Grateful Dead), and there is a way to tag such so that the title of each cd is exactly the same, but they are distinguished by a "Disc" number tag.  My metadata editors all seem to support this, but my uServe doesn't seem to . . . or nStream/nServe don't reveal them.

Any experience one way or the other?

Otherwise, I have to put "CD 1" etc in the title (which is the default way the uServe rips them, but other rippers don't necessarily).

IIRC my HDX has on occasion done this automatically, but on other sets it has not. When it doesn't manual editing is necessary.

Depends a bit on the AMG Database from which the UServe and/or HDX get the metadata. Sometimes it works, but on most of the occasions I had to rename the discs as you've mentioned.

But for discs I rip myself on XLD . . . if I use that Disc x of y tag, it doesn't seem to work at all to distinguish discs.  Same with downloads I buy from HDTracks.

Truth be told, with my 3-disc Grateful Dead shows, sometimes I just re-do the tags and turn them into one 30-song title so that they don't clutter up the Album list.

Same here though I generally split them into Set 1 and Set 2 - Bobby is usually very helpful at reminding you if the set lists don't match the CDs.

Like you, manually tagging cd 1/2 2/2 etc. doesn't seem to work for me and I use Asset and Bubbleupnp so it's not just a Userve issue

I have never liked the "Disc" tag for some reason.  Maybe it is because not every player has a good way to display the tag, or you need to create a column for it which shows all of the time (annoying).

I simply tag 'Album' as "Europe '72 - CD1", "Europe '72 - CD2"

I like this a lot.

I just acquired the Europe 72 Complete Recordings box set, and that's a good idea -- break each show up into Set 1 and Set 2.  Two "albums" per show isn't bad, and there's a logic to it. I like that; thanks!

I know this is Naim server specific, but I find the tag useful as I can then configure my non Naim UPnP server how to display, title and reference disc sets without having to 'hard' encode details in the CD title etc. This allows me to change at a whim without having edit hundreds if not thousands of meta data tags.
