QNAP HS-210 SILENT NAS and HDX
Posted by: lovethatsound on 24 January 2014
Interesting -- I did not know that Qnap have fanless nas offerings. But with WD Red drives, I am not sure how they can be "absolutely noise-free" to use their words. But I would be motivated to try a fanless nas if the reviews are good.
AnandTech have a review of the HS-210 on their website now.
It will be as good a match as any for the HDX. I use mine with a T410 and it's been flawless.
I have the same combination, silent enought, setup very easy, can be setup to be on when used only, can be used as cloud etc... It is quite nice. Options for upnp: own, twonky, asset.
Hi Gandalf.
Where did you find the info that Asset is running on the HS-210? I only know about Twonky from QNAP. Do QNAP offer it nowadays as an option? Just wondering, because I'm very interested in this silent NAS as well since I heard the sound difference it makes when placing the NAS on the FraimLite with all my other equipment.

QNAP have just added the M500 960GB SSD to their compatible SSD list so you could add one of those to the NAS to keep it really silent. I'm thinking of replacing the 2GB HDD in my QNAP TS-119PII NAS with one as the hard drive has a habit of vibrating the NAS chassis. The large SSDs are tempting now that the price has come down to around £330. If you use compressed FLAC to store your music and then get the UPNP server to transcode to WAV you can fit plenty of music on a 960GB SSD.
Check this one, they are promoting this qnap issue in front page as well.
Thanks for the info. Will definitely check it out!

Hi, did you get the QNAP HS-210? I recently did, and find that n-Stream regularly loses connectivity to the uPNP Server, or it can take a long time to retrieve song lists ...
Any similar experiences? Carl
just got a QNAP 210 HS with 2 red x2 TB memory - works a treat - upstairs by main computer linked to NSX via Ethernet and delivo plugs
would certainly recommend it - I know some members don't like Twonky but it certainly does all I need to be honest
NDX seems to like it too, the sound is superb - use dBpoweramp for ripping -
Good to hear Antony, Thanks.
I ran Linn Kinsky on my MAC and performance was great, so I figured the retrieval delays were due to n-Stream - I enabled UPnP compatibility mode, and now it all works fine :-)
Hey, yes it's good actually ... I thought that I was having UPnP issues but they seem to be down to n-Stream on my mobile.
I'll update closer to end of June, but so far it looks like I'd recommend it!
I had the silent NAS as well, but returned it. I wanted to run it next to a streamer on a frame shelf. That is because I heard that what the NAS sits on makes an audile difference. But when inserting the Seagate NAS drive 4 TB HDD, I could clearly hear the drives operating. Then I bought WD red 4TB drives to check the sound with those and I could still hear them, even though they are less noisy than the Seagates. But the setup was still not suitable for operating it in my listening room on a frame shelf. So I tried a 1TB 2,5 inch samsung drive. Now this was good, almost completely silent.
But then I learned that the RIPs by a HDX sound better than any other rips I could produce (I tried a ton of drives, internal and external, EAC, DBPoweramp). I also heard that the HDX internal drive sounds better than served from an external drive, so I decided to get the HDX instead.
If you need a NAS that's almost completely silend, get the 210 with 2,5 inch HDDs. If it does not have to be completely silent but still rather quiet, then the TS-421 from QNAP might also be an option. It's much more quiet than the 2 Bay NAS from QNAP (I had one before) and much faster than the HS210. Serving power on the HS210 is reduced so it can be built without a fan. I found it somewhat slow in comparison to my previous TS-219P+.
