Unitiserve offline
Posted by: TN on 25 January 2014
I took a break and when I came back later, I found that NStream wasnt showing the Unitiserve. Using n-Serve, it shows that the unitiserve is offline. I have set it up that it has a fixed IP address on the network. Logging into router settings, shows the serve is connected on the network.
How do I get it to be online? I had set in the "preferences" that connection is manual with the IP address inserted but it is still offline.
I also want to update the firmware. Can this update be down while it is offline or should I wait until it is online?
Thanks.
Morning Tn,
Sounds to me it's changed its IP Address. Can you access via its last known IP Address from a web browser?
Steve
Are there any benefits to using a fixed IP address, other than the excitement of trying to find it on your network later?
My advice fwiw would be to switch back to DHCP and let your router take care of finding both the US and the i-device and any other network stuff. DHCP actually works remakably well !
Updating the server firmware is done through a cd, so no probems there, you have to download and iso image and burn it on to a cd. Put the cd in the drive and the rest is done by the player in about 30 minutes. The n-serve issue can both be a iphone router issue, or it could be a problem with the ip address. Have you tried to access the userve through the web interface? You take the address the userve is assigned from the router and open that as a normal web url: http:// and then the ip address, e.g. http://192.168.1.59
You can check its settings in the desktop client. Make sure you run the Set IP tool that you download from the Naim website. There are four settings that you need to ensure match between the Serve and the router.
I posted detailed instructions on doing the upgrade in the streaming forum last year, which may help you. Get the thing working first though. You may find that by turning the Serve off ( wait for the logo to stop flashing) and on again sorts the problem with no other intervention.
Ensure when fixing the ip that you have entered appropriate dns addresses as well, if its resolving back to you router make sure the router has some addresses.
DNS (domain name server) is one of the four, along with IP. If you run the set IP tool, you'll find the names of the others, sorry I can't remember them.
Guys, the fact the IP address for either UPnP server or the Network player changes shouldn't stop Nstream from working. In Nstream setup it will search for the network player, and at the root directory on the Nstream you select your UPnP server. (Shown as a square icon)
The UPnP protocols use multicast groups and broadcast discovery to find each other. Using fixed IP address removes this flexibility and can force the system to work, but you are papering over cracks of issues with your LAN equipment that might haunt you later.
The only components I fix on my setup are my NASs because with the OS I use on my uPnP server, it currently has a bug and so can't discover the NAS address. I still use DHCP for the NASes but configure my DHCP to assign specific addresses.
BTW there are several apps on iOS and other OS that scan the subnet and arp tables and return all active IP addresses with host name and MAC address on your network. Very useful for larger home networks. I use the Net Master iPad app with its LAN scan function. My Naim NDX is shown as an Asia Pacific Microsystem registered MAC address.

I am talking about setting the ip of the server which is what you need the ip tool for. Its delivered the services so i think will benefit from being set. In fairness the dns will not effect it being seen on the lan, but worth ensuring everything is running the same info.
Thanks for the replies.
Logging into the router shows that the server's IP address is fixed. Through n-Serve, I tried changing back to DHCP but it didnt work.
Tried the Windows desktop client to connect to the server but kept getting this error message: Request Timed Out..
Because it is offline, I cannot access it via the web browser using its IP address, which I could earlier in the day.
I tried to switch it off but although the instructions say to touch the front logo for 5 seconds to get it into shut down mode, I did this and watched and waited and nothing happened. Tried again a few more times but still nothing happened. Will it cause damage it I were to just switch it off now?
Don't just switch it off. Put your whole thumb over the logo and wait a while and see it it then starts flashing. I touch with your finger won't work.
I would check the basics, is the ethernet lead good? In short the serve is not connected to the network or its IP is conflicting with another on the network, ensure this has not occured every device must have a unique IP address.
Tried with my whole thumb on it and waited and nothing happened.
I'll send an email to naimsupport for help.
That's a good idea, don't risk messing it up.

Hi TN
I had the exact same problem just before Christmas. In the end I had to switch it off at the back, and send it back to Naim. They replaced four faulty components inside, which included the front touch logo. They also fitted a new power supply. I no longer have this unit.
I hope you manage to get it sorted.
