Question regarding Mac OS X (Mavericks) and music files
Posted by: gsh on 26 January 2014
Hi,
after struggling for a good while withe my LaCie WirelessSpace NAS I found out that in Finder some of the files show the symbol of a note whereas others show the symbol of the VLC app. And only the ones with the note sign show up on my UnitiQute and n-Stream. Can anyone please tell me a possible reason for the different symbols and how to harmonize the files?
Thanks for your help in advance,
Gottfried
The reason for different symbols is that they will be different file types, the one with the note will be associated with iTunes to play it and the one with VLC symbol will be associated to VLC. To find out what the file type is and which is the default application to play the file just select it and then select file>get info from menu. The one's with the VLC symbol are probably a format that can't be played by the qute, if this is the case they will need to be converted to a different format. First find out what they are then I'm sure there will be plenty of people along to assist on how to convert.
Thanks, Alfa4life,
the files are all of the same type! I have for example a folder with mp3 files and half of them has the note sign and the other half the VLC symbol. Similar with a folder containing only FLACs. My post would have been clearer if I had managed to add a screen shot. All respective files were created in one ripping process. The Posting Tips seem not to cover that topic. (The screen shot is PNG. Has it to be JPEG?)

PNG or JPG good question, I suspect it's jpg, picture is hosted by something like photo bucket, so whatever that will accept see link

It would appear from what you describe that at some point you added VLC which then became the default player for mp3 and flac files, iTunes can't play flac files. What you could try is from the get info window set one of the VLC files to be played by iTunes and see if it shows up in nstream.
If that does not fix the problem that I suspect that the problem is that you upnp server is not pointing at all the files. Is the server on the Mac or the Lacie and what is it?
Sounds like you have used vlc to convert audio files back to their original folders?
Thanks Alfa4life and garyi. I set VLC to play FLACs on my MBP and iTunes to play mp3. Will change all to iTunes well knowing that iTunes cannot play the FLACs. After doing so i will synchronize the NAS with the iTunes library. Hope that's doing the trick. BTW I have no idea what server is running on the LaCie. There is a web interface to the LaCie that gives no access to the server. I just can set it to act as a music server and to create an iTunes database.

Try putting the files that will not play on a memory stick and plug into the Qute. If they play then that points to the upnp server not working correctly
if you use a program like Amarra or Audirvana iTunes will play flac. Those two programs run along side of iTunes. Demo them and pick the one that sounds the best on your system, well worth it in my opinion. I chose Audirvana.
I see I see.
I am just getting all the info on the Naim hardware myself. I just thought I would add my two cents. Forgot about the upnp vs. what I use. Seems that many people have issues but this forum solves them. Which is pretty awesome.
Thank you all!
I think I can manage things now with FLACs tagged as iTunes music. Nevertheless I do not understand why and how a setting that tells the OS on my Apple computer to open files with a specific application influences the files themselves. But it seems to be embedded in the files and the server on the NAS seems to recognize it. BTW: FLACS that could be seen by the server did play on the UQ with no problems.
